Why I - Lydia Kret

I can honestly say that I love my job. I like getting out of bed and coming to work every morning.

After 12 years of working in food service management, I quit my job and came to EMU in 1992, where I completed a two-year, coordinated program to become a registered dietician. I went on to receive a master's in human nutrition from EMU.

When I started working here in 1995, my first job was helping a colleague by monitoring students in the field to ensure that they met the competencies set forth by the accrediting body, the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. Then, I was called to teach a course in community nutrition and my career evolved from there.

After teaching for a couple of years, I became the director of the Office of Nutrition Services located in 108 Roosevelt Hall. We offer useful resources for healthy living at the lowest cost possible. One-on-one counseling on fad diets, diabetes, cholesterol levels and weight management; body composition and nutrient analysis are available for students, staff, faculty and the community. It's a great office to be a part of.

Currently, I am the interim director of the dietetics and nutrition program. I am responsible for mostly administrative tasks: making sure the curriculum is where it needs to be; keeping proper documentation; resolving student issues and working with the staff to ensure they have the tools they need to perform well.

The best part of my job is the people. The students are wonderful and the people I work with are amazing.
