  • Nutrition discussion: America's nutrition leader, Zonya Foco, is coming to campus Monday, March 12, 7 p.m., EMU Student Center, for a special fundraiser for the Student Dietetic Association at EMU. Foco will present "100-Percent Fad-Free," or how you can ditch the diet mentality and discover how eight simple habits can become an invisible force in your life and help you be healthier. The event, scheduled as part of National Nutrition Month, is open to the public. Tickets are $5, with all proceeds earmarked for the Food Gatherers Agency.   • General education advising training: General Education advising training sessions are open to all faculty, staff, students or administrators interested in learning the specifics of the new General Education Program in preparation for advising students. R.S.V.P.s are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. All participants will receive a Gen Ed advising packet with detailed reference materials. There are four training sessions scheduled for March (all sessions are 3-5 p.m. in Halle Auditorium). Dates are Tuesday, March 13; Wednesday, March 14; Tuesday, March 20; and Wednesday, March 21.   • Board of Regents meeting: The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents meets Tuesday, March 20, in Welch Hall. The committee schedule is as follows: Athletic Affairs, 12:45-1:30 p.m., Room 201; Faculty Affairs, 12:45-1:30 p.m., Room 205; Student Affairs, 1:45-2:30 p.m., Room 201; Educational Policies, 1:45-2:30 p.m., Room 205; Finance and Audit, 2:30-4 p.m., Room 201; and Regular Board meeting, 4:15 p.m., Room 201.   • WEMU pledge drive: Sign up now for your preferred phone shift for WEMU's spring pledge drive that takes place from 6 a.m.-11 p.m. March 23-30; and 6 a.m.-4 p.m. March 31. Shifts are a minimum of two consecutive hours and food will be provided. For more information or to sign up, call 487-2229.
  • Latino Alumni Chapter scholarship: EMU Alumni Chapter Scholarship applications are now available at the Center for Multicultural Affairs, room 358 Student Center. The deadline is March 23. For more information call 487-2377.

  • Employee Recognition Program: All staff and faculty who have service anniversaries in 2007 of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years should mark their calendars for Tuesday, March 27, 8:30-10:30 a.m., as EMU celebrates its annual Employee Recognition Program in the Student Center Ballroom. A breakfast and special program are scheduled. During the program, employees will receive a brochure from which they can order their own individual gift. Invitations and a more detailed announcement will be forthcoming. For information, call Jeanette Hassan, 487-3195.
  • Flexible Spending Account deadline for 2006: The 2006 calendar year Flexible Spending Account year for medical and dependent care expenses ended Dec. 31, 2006.   Any receipts for claim expenses incurred as of Dec. 31, 2006, must be submitted for reimbursement by the run-out period of March 31, 2007. Reimbursement forms are available on the Human Resources Web site under HR Forms or in the Benefits Office, 235 Warner. If you have any questions about eligible expenses, call Ceridian Benefits Services, (877) 799-8820, or go to their Web site at http://www.ceridian-benefits.com. Due to the increased volume of claims submission, Ceridian Benefits Services are extending their Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Call Center hours to accommodate the higher call volumes during this time of the year. The hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. EST; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. EST. For those who submit receipts by FAX, they should make sure to receive confirmation the FAX is received. When submitting by regular mail, make sure to keep copies of all receipts. Because of the increased calls, you may experience delays in getting to Customer Service.
  • EMU Day in Lansing: Help spread the good word about EMU! A special "EMU Day in Lansing" is scheduled Wednesday, May 9. If you are interested in being part of a team that will visit with state legislators May 9, we want to hear from you. Interested faculty/staff members should contact the Office of Government Relations by e-mailing Holly Smith at holly.smith@emich.edu or by calling 487-7048 to sign up to participate in this event. The day's activities will begin with a breakfast at the Capitol at 9 a.m., followed by teams (consisting of faculty, staff, students and alumni) meeting with individual legislators until 4 p.m. Training and materials will be provided. Please sign up to participate by Wednesday, April 18.

    From the ARPANET to the Internet: Paul Ceruzzi, curator of Aerospace Electronics and Computing at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum, presents "From the ARPANET to the Internet: How a Military Project Became a Worldwide Cultural Phenomenon, 1970-1995," Wednesday, April 4, 3:30 p.m., Grand Ballroom B, EMU Student Center. This talk is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The department of computer science sponsors this event. For information, go to www.emich.edu/compsci
  • Benefit concert: Musician/vocalist Judy Piazza will perform a benefit concert featuring unique drums from around the world,native flutes, didgerdoos, an alternative dulcimer and vocals, Monday, March 26, 7:30 p.m., Sponberg Theatre. Piazza — recognized here and abroad for her work with rhythm, voice and sound — weaves vocals with drum making fora melodic and lyrical evening. Audience members are invited to bring thie rown dru or rhythm instrument and join in the closing circle during the concert's finale. Prior to the concert, Piazza will conduct a master class for EMU music students. All proceeds from the concert will go to SOS Community Services, which provides services for homeless families in Washtenaw County. For information, call 487-4400.
