Fallon appointed EMU's next president; takes over July 15

John A. Fallon III won't take over as Eastern Michigan's 21st president for close to another four months. But, he knows what he plans to do when he gets here —  find ways to generate more revenue resources through fundraising and discover what he called "the spirit" of the institution.

SPIRITED INTRODUCTION:
John A. Fallon, III shows his
excitement after being
introduced as Eastern Michigan
University's president-elect at a
press conference March 15.
Fallon takes over July 15.

"It's an honor to be chosen as EMU's next president. This is a very special place with a faculty and staff that are committed to providing an outstanding educational and co-curricular experience for students," Fallon said. "The people that I've been fortunate to meet so far have really impressed me with their passion for Eastern. I am eager to begin working with students, faculty, staff, alumni, the community and the Board of Regents to further enhance EMU's value throughout the state."

Fallon, 58, was appointed president of the University by a unanimous vote of the EMU Board of Regents at its regular meeting March 15. Fallon, currently president of State University of New York (SUNY)-Potsdam, will officially take office July 15. He will replace Craig Willis, who has served as interim president since Aug. 16, 2004. Although contract details are still being ironed out, Fallon will be paid an annual salary of $225,000.

"We are sobered and humbled by the challenges ahead, not just at Eastern but in all of higher education," Fallon said at a press conference in Welch Hall where he was introduced as EMU's president-elect. "We are determined to provide distinguished leadership to this institution."
