Explore Eastern event encourages faculty, staff and alumni to bring students to campus

By Ron Podell

Typically, parents and their high school-aged sons and daughters are expected at Explore Eastern events on campus. That demographic is still more than welcome at the upcoming March 28 event.

But, in a new twist, EMU's Office of Admissions is encouraging EMU faculty, staff and alumni to bring a high school student they know — perhaps the babysitter or kid who mows the lawn — to check out Eastern and see campus through the student's eyes. In the process, it's hoped that those same EMU employees and alumni will discover something new about campus themselves.

Eastern by EMU faculty, staff and alumni.

Dubbed "Renew Your View of EMU," Explore Eastern is scheduled Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and starts the Student Center.

"By bringing a prospective student to campus, they (faculty, staff and alumni) would be able to go through a process they've long forgotten or never seen," said Kathy Orscheln, EMU's director of admissions. "They would be able to see (the process) through the eyes of potential students."

Getting EMU employees and alumni involved serves multiple purposes, said B.J. Selfridge, an EMU admissions adviser, who came up with the "Renew Your View" concept.

"It gives them a chance to see what we do and what events we have," he said. "It also gives them a sense of ownership. They become part of the recruiting process. We all affect recruiting."

Each high school student accompanied by an EMU alumni member or faculty/staff member will receive a free EMU backpack.

During their campus tour, students will have the opportunity to see a classroom building, Halle Library, the Rec/IM Building and a residence hall room. Eastern Michigan faculty will be available to discuss specific majors and academic programs with students. Deans from each of EMU's colleges will provide a brief presentation about the programs available in their college. All students attending will be able to apply for free.

"Explore Eastern is going to happen as it always has," said Selfridge, who expects approximately 350 high school students to attend. "We're just providing a different way to do it."
