Health Education and Wellness within University Health Services presented
findings of the 2006 EMU CORE alcohol and other drug use survey to the
Board of Regents March 20. The national survey was developed to measure
alcohol and other drug usage, attitudes and perceptions among college students
at two- and four-year institutions, including Eastern Michigan University.
The online survey drew responses from 1,754 EMU students, with statistics
showing EMU students' use of alcohol is less than the national average.
Some key survey statistics for EMU students include:
Average number of drinks per week 3.3 (national average is 5.8)
Students who reported binging in last
two weeks 36.5 percent (national average is 47 percent)
Drink alcohol three times or more per
week 15.8 percent (national average is 23.5 percent)
Has had five or more drinks per sitting
in previous two weeks 36.6 percent (national average
is 40 percent)
Used tobacco three or more times per week
16.8 percent (national average is 17 percent)
