The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

  • Provost search under way: Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin has initiated a search for a new provost and executive vice president. A new Web site has been launched that will provide information about the search, the process and its progress. The Web site includes the advertisement, the roster of search committee members, a profile of EMU, the tentative search schedule, a link to the regular updates page and a link to the University's consultant, Storbeck/Pimente.   • EagleMail enhancements: EagleMail feature enhancements are on the way. Collaboration tools will be activated Tuesday, March 31. The features being rolled out are EagleMail Documents and sharing of mail folders, address books, task lists, briefcase folders and document notebooks. EagleMail Briefcase and EagleMail Tasks features also will be available. For information on what these features are and how to use them, visit http://www.emich.edu/eaglemail.     University Gallery hosts
    the Michigan Comics Show
    March 31-June 5.

    Michigan Comics Show: The University Gallery hosts the Michigan Comics Show, an exhibition of editorial cartoons, gag panels, comic strips and comic book art by 50 contemporary creators Tuesday, March 31, through June 5. A reception is set for Tuesday, March 31, 5-7 p.m., with a panel discussion to follow from 7-8:30 p.m., Student Center Ballroom B.   • Dangerous assignment: Join the EMU Friends of the Library and William Hanford at a book signing and lecture Tuesday, March 31, 7 p.m., room 300, Halle Library. Hanford, a 1947 graduate of EMU, will speak about "A Dangerous Assignment," a book based on his personal experiences in the Army during World War II.   • Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon: Eastern Michigan University's Women's Center hosts The Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon Wednesday, April 1, 12:30-2:30 p.m., Ballroom B, Student Center. The Women of Excellence Awards are designed to acknowledge those members of the University community who enhance and make a positive difference in the lives of women at EMU.   • Vice president for student affairs and enrollment management interviews scheduled: The campus community is invited to attend presentations and open forums for candidates for vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. The schedule is as follows: Katherine Zatz, Senior Consultant, Toolpack Consulting LLC; and Vice President, Development, Allpar, LLC, New Jersey, Thursday, April 2; Michael Laliberte, Vice President for Student Affairs, Boise State University, Monday, April 6; Bernice Lindke, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Eastern Michigan University, Wednesday, April 8; and Wade Robinson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Friday, April 17. Presentations are scheduled from 2:30-3:15 p.m. and open forums from 3:15-4:30 pm in room 310A, Student Center, except April 6 when the location changes to room 310B.     Distinguished Speaker Series: The EMU Clinical Research Administration Program Distinguished Speaker Series continues Thursday, April 2, 7:30 p.m., Continuing Education Auditorium, St. Joseph's Hospital. Rear Admiral Sandra L. Kweder, deputy director of the Office of New Drugs for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, presents, "Directions for the FDA in an Era of Change." Kweder has an outstanding reputation in the area of antiviral, especially HIV drug development; and has led the Division of Postmarketing Surveillance and Epidemiology at the Office of Antimicrobial Products.   • Jazz Dinner Dance: Step out on the town and enjoy an evening of jazz at EMU's Operation JDD Jazz Dinner Dance Saturday, April 4, 6:30-10:30 p.m., Student Center Ballroom. This year's event will feature a cocktail reception and silent auction at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing at 7:15 p.m. Guests will enjoy music by The Couriers and the EMU Jazz Ensemble.   • MPSERS information meetings: MPSERS participants who are planning on retiring in the next two to fours years are encouraged to attend an online Preretirement Information Meeting (PRIM) for public school employees. This two-hour live Webinar will help you make informed decisions about your retirement and your future. Topics include pension eligibility, pension calculations, payment options, service credit, how and when to apply for insurance, and a question-and-answer session. Registration is required.     Nominations sought for Lecturers Outstanding Teaching Award: The Provost's Office is now accepting nominations for the 2008-2009 EMU-FT Lecturers Outstanding Teaching Award. This award provides the formal opportunity to honor outstanding full-time lecturers for their dedication to students' education, as well as demonstrate the value placed in them by the institution. Nomination materials are available on the Web at www.emich.edu/public/aa/Info_Faculty.htm.
  • National Survey of Student Engagement: Eastern Michigan University is participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement. Selected freshmen and seniors should have already received a survey invitation e-mail from Don Loppnow, provost and executive vice president. A follow-up e-mail about this survey will be sent out soon. The survey will help EMU learn more about current students' academic activities and experiences on campus. It also will help EMU to provide improved educational opportunities for future students. Selected students are encouraged to take 15 minutes to complete the survey. The suvey is accessible through the e-mail invitation or at www.nssesurvey.org
