Craig Dionne,
professor of English, recently was a guest speaker on National
Public Radio's "Shakespeare in American Life." In
celebration of its 75th anniversary in 2007, the Folger
Shakespeare Library will present a three, one-hour radio
documentary, exploring the influence of William Shakespeare's
works on American civic, political an cultural life. Dionne
speaks about his current project, "Native Shakespeares:
Indigenous Appropriations on a Global Stage," an edited
volume of essays to be published by Ashgate Press in 2008.
Narrated by actor Sam Waterston, the documentary will be

Sylvia Weinberg,
associate professor of social work, presented a
paper entitled, "Listening to the Voices of LGBT Folk Margins" at
the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice at the University
of Wyoming.

University students Jesus Acosta-Hughes, Adrienne
Armstrong, Arianne Baker, Kimberly
Jasper, Erika Meier, Liliana
Nunez-Aguirre and Evelyn Rasp were
inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate
Hispanic Honor Society March 20. The seven were inducted
into Chapter Chi Rio #544. Founded in 1919 at the University
of California, Berkeley, Sigma Delta Pi honors those
who have completed three years of study of college-level
Spanish, including at least three semesters of a course
in Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization,
with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all Spanish courses taken.
Candidates also must rank in the upper 35 percent of
their class and must have completed at least three
semesters or five quarters of college work.
Four
Eastern Michigan University wrestlers were recently named
to the Academic All-MAC Team. Senior Tony
Lyssiotis (political science), junior Cory
Mancuso Jr. (physical education), and redshirt
freshmen Zach
Donofrio (management) and Chris
Jenkins (no major listed) were named. Lyssiotis,
a repeat performer, led EMU's contingent, which was the
largest of any school named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
"It's much needed in our sport and here at EMU that our
student-athletes take the classroom as seriously as they
do the competition side of things and be recognized for
their efforts," said EMU Head Wrestling Coach Derek DelPorto.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2
cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent
of the contests for a particular sport.

Robert Citino,
a professor of history, recently presented an address, "Ways
of War: The Wehrmacht vs. the United States Army, 1944-45," as
part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Belton
Y. Cooper Lecture Series. His lecture examined the conflict
between the U.S. Army and Hitler's armed forces, the Wehrmacht,
in Europe in 1944 during World War II. The conflict brought
together two different ways of war and two ways of envisioning
armed conflict on the modern battlefield, Citino said durng
his March 1 lecture. The lecture series presents an annual
lecture on military history and social conflict. Citino
is a renowned German military historian, whose most recent
book is "The German
Way of War."

Linda Adler-Kassner,
associate professor of English language and literature,
has been elected to the executive board of the Council
of Writing Program Administrators. The council is a national
organization of college and university faculty with professional
and scholarly interests in directing writing programs.
She will serve as vice president through 2009 and as president
from 2009-2011.
Kay Woodiel,
director of the Office of Diversity and Community Involvement,
was honored Feb. 8 at the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC)
and Michigan Community Service Commission's Annual Service-Learning
and Community Service Awards ceremony. Woodiel received
the MCC Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Award.
Five members of the
EMU women's swimming and diving team were recently named
to the Academic All-MAC Team. Eastern Michigan led
all schools in number of honorees. Both Madeleine
Pilchard (accounting),
the MAC Swimmer of the Year, and Sarah
Chrzanowski (elementary education), the
MAC Diver of the Year, were named to the All-MAC Team.
Chrzanowski is a third-time honoree while Pilchard was
honored for a second year. The two were joined by first-timers
senior Claire Lentendre (hearing impaired
concentration), junior Becky
Renkola (political science) and sophomore
Hannah Burandt (math secondary
education).
