Eastern Michigan University faculty and tutors who have
assisted students seeking help at Holman Learning Center
were honored during the Ninth Annual Faculty and Tutor
Appreciation Day.
The event, which took place in the Student Center Ballroom
March 30, concluded EMU's annual "Salute to Excellence" Week.

The program recognizes and rewards faculty, tutors and
supplemental who have displayed excellent teaching and
learning strategies. Holman Learning Center provides supplemental
instruction to students; tutors for a variety of subjects;
offers skill-building workshops; testing accommodations;
and has a first-year academic support program.
Beyond the Call of Duty Awards, the most prestigious bestowed
at the ceremony, went to Pamela Becker,
assistant professor of technology (faculty award); Thomas
Ulch,
a lecturer of English language and literature (lecturer
award), and Suchithra
Seshadrinathan, in the category of individual
tutor. Becker and Ulch each received a plaque and a $750
check. Seshadrinathan received a plaque and a $500 check.
In all, 23 awards (out of 164 nominations) were handed
out during the ceremony. These were:
Tutor/Supplemental Instruction Leader Awards: Tian
Zhang and Christopher Kline,
individual tutor; and Gin (Ping) Zhou, Megan
Foldenauer and Allison Oleynik, supplemental
instruction leader.
Faculty awards went to Robin Lucy, College
of Arts and Sciences (Outstanding Supplemental Instruction); Morgan
Milner, College of Business; Barbara
Leapard, College of Arts and Sciences; and Robert
Carpenter, College of Education; (supporting
role outside classroom). Eric Schulz,
College of Business; William Tucker,
College of Arts and Sciences; Susan McCarthy,
College of Health and Human Services; and Patricia
Pokay and Kathleen Beauvais ,
both from the College of Education; also received faculty
awards (in classroom).
Lecturer awards were given to Kelly Victor-Burke,
College of Arts and Sciences (supplemental instruction); Melissa
Masserant, College of Arts and Sciences, and Laura
Marinez, College of Health and Human Services;
(supporting role - outside classroom); and Karen
Dykstra and Laurianne Hannan,
College of Arts and Sciences, and Gordon Krainen,
College of Education (in classroom).
