Former executive secretary, director of EMU's Snow Health Center die

Pauline "Polly" Poling, an executive secretary at Eastern Michigan University from 1960 to 1986, died March 24. She was 89.

During World War II, Poling worked as a secretary at the Willow Run Bomber Plant and was an active member of the United Service Organizations (USO). She came to EMU in 1960 and worked as an executive secretary until she retired after 26 years of service.

After retirement, Poling volunteered at the Ypsilanti Thrift Shop, joined the Ladies Literary Club and the Clark Road Senior Citizens Lively Travelers group. She also was a longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Poling enjoyed traveling, playing cards, dancing and flower gardening.

Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Poling, of Jamul, Calif.; a daughter, JoAnn Van Aernum, of Lakeville, Minn.; four grandchildren, one great-grandson and two nieces.

A funeral service took place March 28 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Ypsilanti. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church or the Humane Society.

John Sheldon Wyman, former director of Eastern Michigan University's Snow Health Center from 1969-1973, died Feb. 16. He was 97.

Wyman completed his pre-med studies at Michigan State Normal College (Eastern Michigan University) and the University of Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1936. Wyman worked at EMU from 1969 to 1973 as the director of Snow Health Center.

Wyman retired from medicine in 1992 after a 56-year career. His professional memberships included county and state medical societies in Michigan and North Carolina; the American Society of Internal Medicine; and a charter membership in the American College of Emergency Physicians. Wyman's interests included golf, the stock market, Dick Francis novels, cars and University of Michigan football, where he served as team doctor for the 1951 and 1965 Rose Bowl games.

Survivors include two sons, Jack, of Manchester, Mich.; and Robert, of Selma, N.C.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and five stepdaughters, Susan Wyman, of Ann Arbor; Barbara Smith, of Greensboro, N.C.; Anne Wyman, of Selma, N.C.; Marilyn McConnell, of Tucson, Ariz.; and Claudia Colton, of Tucson, Ariz.

Service arrangements are pending. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor.
