The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.
- EMU initiates emergency text messaging system: Eastern Michigan University has initiated an emergency text messaging system for all students, faculty and staff. In the event of an emergency on campus, a short message would be sent via text message to everyone who registers his or her cell phone with the university. Users also can choose to have the emergency alerts sent to their e-mail. If you do not sign up, you won't be able to receive emergency text alerts. There is no charge to the university, but individual phone carriers may assess a charge to users based on individual text messaging plans. HOURS EXTENDED: The Student Center
will extend its hours through April 26 to
accommodate students' study schedules
for finals. |
- Student Center hours extended: The Student Center hours will be extended for finals through Saturday, April 26. The schedule is as follows: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. For Winter Commencement, Sunday, April 27, hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food and retail store hours may vary. - Faculty and author recognition reception: Halle Library presents the EMU Honored Faculty and Author Recognition Reception, Wednesday, April 9, 3-5 p.m., Carillon Room, Halle Library. The accomplishments of tenured faculty, promotions and scholarly publications will be recognized. All faculty, staff and students are invited. Refreshments will be served. - Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon set for April 9: The Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon is scheduled Wednesday, April 9, 1-2:30 p.m., Ballroom B, Student Center. The awards are designed to acknowledge those members of the campus community who enhance and make a positive difference in the lives of women at EMU. The keynote speaker is Linda Schott, associate dean of EMU's College of Arts and Sciences, and the interim director of the Women's and Gender Studies program. - EMU Forensics Showcase: The EMU Forensics Team will soon head to the national tournament in Nashville, Tennessee. In preparation for this trip, EMU Forensics will host a showcase of select performances by students who have qualified for nationals, Wednesday, April 9, 7 p.m., Student Center Auditorium. Wikipedia Lecture Series: Kat Walsh, a member of the Wikimedia Board of Trustees and an administrator for Wikipedia, presents a lecture Thursday, April 10, 7 p.m., Student Center Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. This concludes the Wikipedia Lecture Series, which is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, and Campus Life. - Distinguished Speaker Series: Earl W. Houlihan, vice president, global regulatory affairs and quality assurance, Medidata Worldwide Solutions, presents "Globalization of the Clinical Research Enterprise," Thursday, April 10, 7:30 p.m., St. Joseph's Hospital Education Center Auditorium, 4936 W. Clark Rd., in Superior Township. Houlihan is an expert on global clinical trials and adviser on the Chinese Regulatory Authority. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, concludes the Clinical Research Administration Distinguished Speaker Series. - Stonewall Scholarships: These two $1,000 scholarships are given to EMU students who have demonstrated leadership and/or involvement in organizations, activities, or issues that promote a positive gay/lesbian environment. - Asian/Pacific Islander art exhibit: In celebration of Asian/Pacific Islander Month, Ford Gallery will host "SERENITY", an art exhibit composed of original artwork, painting and artifacts contributed by Asian artists. The exhibit will run through Friday, April 11. - Honorary Consul of Spain to attend gala reception: EMU, the Department of Foreign Languages and the Honorary Consul of Spain will host a gala reception for the honorable Javier Ruperez, Friday, April 18, 7 p.m. to midnight, room 310 A & B, Student Center. Ruperez, former ambassador of Spain to the U.S. and the United Nations, is currently the Consul General of Spain. The event is by invitation only. Consul generals from various countries, business executives, community leaders, EMU faculty, administrators and alumni will attend the event. The cost is $60 per guest. Business attire is required. - Training for Finance Self-Service: The Business & Finance Division announces that Finance Self-Service is now available via my.emich. This tool is designed to make budget monitoring, development and analysis much easier. Hands-on instructor-led training on how to locate and view budget information via my.emich is offered during April. Online registration is required. - Endangered languages documentary to be shown at EMU: "The Linguists," a documentary film that debuted at The Sundance Film Festival in January, will be shown Tuesday, April 22, 5 p.m., room 300, Halle Library. David Harrison, an associate professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College, on whose work the film is based, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterwards. Eastern Michigan University's Institute for Language Information and Technology, the LINGUIST List and the linguistics program in the English language and literature department, are sponsors of the event.
