Holman Learning Center honors faculty, tutors for their efforts

Faculty and tutors who have aided Holman Learning Center in making a positive difference for Eastern Michigan University students were honored during the Eighth Annual Faculty and Tutor Appreciation Day.

The event, which took place in the Student Center Ballroom April 3, concluded EMU's annual "Salute to Excellence" Week.

Tutor Appreciation Day April 3. The ceremony
took place in the Student Center Ballroom.

The program recognizes and rewards faculty and tutors who have displayed excellent teaching and learning strategies. Holman Learning Center provides supplemental instruction to students; tutors for a variety of subjects; offers skill-building workshops; testing accommodations; and has a first-year academic support program.

"We had a record-high 168 nominations for this year's Faculty and Tutor Appreciation program," said Judy Mack, learning center specialist with Holman Learning Center.

Beyond the Call of Duty Awards, the most prestigious bestowed at the ceremony, went to Kyung-Hee Kim, assistant professor of teacher education (faculty award); Laurianne Hannan, an adjunct lecturer of biology (lecturer award), and Matthew Penix, in the category of individual leader or supplemental instruction leader. Kim and Hannan each received a plaque and a $750 check. Penix received a plaque and a $500 check.

In all, 23 awards were handed out during the ceremony. These were:

Tutor/Supplemental Instruction Leader Awards: Hasina Saraha and Monica Szydlowski, individual tutor; and Paul Umlauf, supplemental instruction leader.

Faculty awards went to George Cassar, College of Arts and Sciences (Outstanding Supplemental Instruction); Natasha Kovaevic, College of Arts and Sciences (Outstanding Faculty in a Supporting Role); Howard Bunsis, College of Business (Outstanding Faculty in Classroom Instruction); Stephen Blair, Robert Citino, David Folk and Cara Shillington, College of Arts and Sciences (Outstanding Faculty in Classroom Instruction); Pamela Lemerand, College of Health and Human Services (Outstanding Faculty in Classroom Instruction); and Elizabeth Johnson, College of Education (Outstanding Faculty in Classroom Instruction).

Lecturer awards were given to Sukru Koyluoglu, College of Arts and Sciences (Outstanding Lecturer in a Supporting Role); Karen Sanford, College of Education (Outstanding Lecturer in a Supporting Role); and Paul Horvath, Joseph Lowry and Tony Spicer, College of Arts and Sciences (Outstanding Lecturer in Classroom Instruction).

Superior Service Awards went to Angela Colaluca and Nadine Yonka, student assistants in Holman Learning Center. Cortney Totty, a graduate student in Holman Learning Center, received the Outstanding Outreach Award.
