The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.
- Take Our Daughters to Work Day: "Take Our Daughters to Work" Day is scheduled Thursday, April 28, for girls ages 9-12. Girls will attend three workshops (9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.); enjoy a luncheon in the McKenny Union Ballroom, noon; and spend the rest of the day on the job with their parents or sponsors, 1-5 p.m.
"The objective of the Women's Commission is to support women's issues and to work for equality. This day gives girls an opportunity to see that women can be successful in a variety of fields," said Joanne Hansen, chair of the EMU Women's Commission. "It's been a very successful program, and we appreciate the President's support and participation of everyone."
This year's workshops are "The Great Soccer Challenge," presented by intercollegiate athletics; "Fun with Chemistry," presented by the chemistry department; "Electronics — Not Just for Boys Anymore," and "Do Hippos Float?" both presented by the physics department; "Math Games from Around the World" presented by the mathematics department; and "Under the Influence: What Young People Should Know," presented by the department of public safety.
"Take Our Daughters to Work" day was started in 1993 by the Ms Foundation as a national annual event to introduce daughters to a better understanding of work opportunities.

- Alumni Awards Dinner to honor seven: The 44th Annual Alumni Awards Dinner is scheduled Saturday, April 30, Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest. A reception begins at 6 p.m., with dinner and the program following at 7 p.m. This year's Alumni Awards recipients are: Charles D. Batch ('97), Patrick Gannon ('92), Annette Sabo Johnson ('94), Woodrow R. English ('75), Roy McCalister, Jr. ('77), Robert L. Johnston (service to the University) and Rick Ross ('75, '77, '85). Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased through the office for alumni relations, 487-0250, or e-mail alumni.relations@emich.edu.

Pie a professor: Eastern's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a community service organization, is hosting its second annual Pie A Professor fundraiser Tuesday, April 12, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., in front of Pray-Harrold; and Wednesday, April 13, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Mark Jefferson. This fundraiser was originally designed to raise money to register students for the National Bone Marrow Registry, in order to find a donor for Susan Miciura, an EMU student who died from Hodgkin's disease. The organization continue to raise money for the fund it created in her memory to fund the group's yearly bone marrow registrations. Gwaltney retirement reception April 13: The teacher education department invites the campus community to a retirement reception for Thomas Gwaltney, professor of teacher education, Wednesday, April 13, 1:30 p.m., 201 Welch Hall. Gwaltney has been an educator for 50 years and a professor in the teacher education department for 41 years. Please join us in celebrating his dedication to education. - World College international travel grants available: International travel support is available to full-time faculty and staff. Special consideration will be given to those who have not received a travel grant previously. The application deadline is May 15. - International Cultural Competence Institute 2005: The Fourth Annual International Cultural Competence Institute (ICCI), sponsored by the World College, will take place May 23-26. ICCI is an opportunity for faculty and staff at EMU to expand their global opportunities and meet others interested in working directly to internationalize the campus. For more information about the goals of ICCI, go to www.emich.edu/worldcollege. The deadline for ICCI applications is Wednesday, April 22. For those faculty and staff who wish to participate in ICCI, download the necessary forms from the Web site. Call 487-2414.
- Attention EMU students with school-aged children: EMU is considering a pilot program on the main campus for school-aged children (ages 5-12) of EMU undergraduate and graduate students. The University is exploring low- or no-cost, after-school, evening and weekend programming. Offerings might include a homework club, recreational sports, board games, age appropriate movies/videos, use of computer labs, access to the pool, and special opportunities like the theater, arts, dance, music and language clubs. Trained and supervised volunteers who are EMU students would provide the service.
