MULTIPLE MEANS: This fall, Eastern Michigan
University's General Education Program will offer a
new interdisciplinary course, PLSC/HLAD 390 -
Poverty, Human Rights and Health. This new class
is part of a two-course sequence that includes a
travel/study abroad component, PLSC/HLAD 391,
to El Salvador in summer 2008.

The two-course sequence meets the general education requirement of Perspectives on a Diverse World, under the Global Awareness portion, as well as Learning Beyond the Classroom (LBC). Students may choose to take only the first part for three credit hours. Those who continue for the second part can earn an additional three credit hours and LBC credit.

PLSC/HLAD 390 addresses the extent and causes of global economic inequality as well as the effects of profound poverty on health, human rights, human development and the quality of individual life. Poverty is an important global problem of our time. It is connected to, or underlies, multiple problems and issues such as pandemics, regime instability, civil strife, terrorism and war. PLSC/HALD 390 is a prerequisite for PLSC/HLAD 391. For more information, contact General Education Director Chris Wood Foreman, 487-0439.
