REPORT CARD: Eastern Michigan

- Fall Convocation: The 2004 Fall Convocation is scheduled Friday, Sept. 24, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Pease Auditorium. Interim President Craig Willis will give remarks about the state of the University, which will be followed by the awarding of the 2004 Institutional Values Awards in six categories. Call 487-2211.
- Working Woman's Survival Course: Faculty and staff are invited to attend a seminar entitled, "Practical Help for Creating Balance in Your Life." The seminar is sponsored by the Office of Human Resources, the Employee Wellness Program & LifeWorks - Ceridian EAP. There will be two sessions Oct. 5, 10-11:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m., Halle Library Auditorium. Each session is limited to 30 participants. If registration responses exceed maximum allotment, a third session will be added Wednesday, Oct. 6. To register, contact Debra Craig at debra.craig@emich.edu or 487-2030 by Oct. 1.
- Grant writing workshop for graduate students: Graduate students are invited to attend a grant-writing workshop. The first of six sessions is scheduled Sept. 21, 3:30-5 p.m., Conference Room, Starkweather Hall. The workshop will provide graduate students with information on how to write a formal proposal for funding. Space is limited. To register, call 487-0042.

- The View From Europe: Ford Gallery presents, "The View From Europe: Political Posters by Floor Wesseling" through Friday, Oct. 1. Mr. Wesseling's posters critique European and American foreign policies from a European standpoint. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For additional information, call 487-0465.
- Wireless networking available at select locations: ICT is pleased to announce the availability of wireless network access at EMU! Wireless network access is currently available in Halle Library and the major dining spaces in McKenny, the Eateries, and Dining Commons One. During the next few days, faculty and staff should receive, via campus mail, brochures covering the wireless project. More detailed information about available wireless locations, future wireless locations, about connecting to the EMU wireless network, and responses to frequently asked questions are provided via the wireless Web page at: http://ict.emich.edu/wireless/
- Women's Center schedules Cell Phone Drive: The EMU Women's Center hosts a Cell Phone Drive Sept. 13-24. Cell phones will be collected and donated to Project Safe House Women's Shelter to be used as emergency phones. Phones will not carry a service, but will be used to dial 911 in case of emergencies. Drop-off sites include the Women's Center, 235 King Hall; Halle Library, in front of the Welcome Center; the information desk at McKenny Union; and the Student Success Office in Putnam Hall.
- Save for college: The Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP), the state-sponsored 529 college savings plan, is an easy way to save for a child's future college expenses with earnings growing tax-free. Plan to attend one of the upcoming MESP presentations that will explain this type of account which allows you to save for eligible college expenses at either private or public higher education institutions across the nation. Under the MESP, an account is opened on behalf of a designated beneficiary. Sessions are scheduled in McKenny Union on the following dates: Wednesday, Sept. 22, noon-1 p.m., Guild Hall; Tuesday, Sept. 28, 10-11 a.m., Alumni Room; Wednesday, Sept. 29, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Guild Hall; and Thursday, Sept. 30, noon-1 p.m., Tower Room. - Show your spirit: As a part of Homecoming Week Sept. 26-Oct. 2, each office or department on campus is encouraged to decorate their door or office in the spirit of EMU. The office or department with the best design and theme will win lunch sponsored by Quiznos Sub in Depot Town. In addition, the winner will be publicized in the Eastern Echo, receive a trophy to display in their office, and be announced at the "GO GREEN" Alumni Tailgate and during the football game. Each year, the trophy will be passed on to the next winner. You may use purchased items, already purchased items or items brought in from outside the office setting. Green and white must be the prominent colors used in the decorating scheme. The offices will be photographed with a digital camera and judged Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. For more information, call the Office of Alumni Relations at 487-0250.
