The following are news briefs about important
activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.
- Student Employment
Job Fair scheduled Sept. 17: The Student
Employment Job Fair is Thursday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m., Student Center Patio. The fair allows
on-campus employers the opportunity to meet, interview
and hire incoming freshmen and currently enrolled
students for job positions in their departments.
In an effort to offer more part-time job opportunities,
some local area employers will be present. For more information,
call 487-2419. Employers need to register on the Career
Services job postings site. For information, have them
call Mary Jones at 487-0400. She will explain to them
how to register.
- Fall 2009 tuition waiver
deadline: The deadline for submitting
tuition waivers for Fall 2009 is Friday, Sept. 18.
All tuition waivers must be submitted to the Benefits
Office. Tuition waivers submitted after Friday, Sept.
18, will not be submitted for approval. For questions,
contact Karyn Jones at 487-3195.
- McNair Scholars Program: Applications
for the McNair Scholars Program are now available. Benefits
include a summer research stipend, faculty research mentor,
travel expenses for presenting research or graduate school
visits, advising and graduate school preparation. The application
deadline is Monday, Sept. 21. For eligibility requirements

GIVING BLOOD: A campus
blood drive is
scheduled
Sept. 21-23, noon to 6
p.m., room 300,
in the
Student Center.

- Campus blood drive: A campus blood drive is scheduled Sept. 21-23, noon to
6 p.m., room 300, in the Student Center. Although walk-ins
are welcome, it is easier and quicker if donors make an
appointment at www.givelife.org.
The code is EMU. All donors will receive a free T-shirt.
Snacks will be available. Each donor can save up to three
lives each time he or she donates. For more information,

EMU Department
of Public Safety open house: An open house
and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new EMU Department
of Public Safety headquarters (in the renovated Hoyt
Conference Center) is scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 22.
A ribbon-cutting will take place at 10:30 a.m. with
tours scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon.
- Board of Regents meeting: The
EMU Board of Regents meets Tuesday, Sept. 22. The schedule
is as follows: Athletic Affairs Committee, 12:45-1:30 p.m.,
room 201; Faculty Affairs Committee, 12:45-1:30 p.m., 205
Welch Hall; Student Affairs Committee, 1:45-2:30 p.m.,
201 Welch Hall; Educational Policies Committee, 1:45-2:30
p.m., 205 Welch Hall; and Finance and Audit Committee,
2:30-4 p.m., 201 Welch Hall; and the regular Board Meeting,
4:15 p.m., Welch Hall. As a result of a time gap between
the finance meeting and the board meeting, the board meeting
may start 15 minutes earlier. Roy Wilbanks is board

- Volunteer Fair scheduled
Sept. 23: The Volunteer Fair is scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 23, 11
a.m. to 2 p.m., Student Center Ballroom. This event is
for students to explore careers with nonprofit agencies,
meet face-to-face with agency representatives, and ask
what it's like to work in the nonprofit organization. Students
seeking an opportunity to help others in the community
are encouraged to attend. Dress appropriately. For more

- International student
health insurance information: All registered
international students with an "F" or "J" visa
status will be billed for student health insurance
UNLESS they have received an "approved" waiver
from Snow Health Center NO LATER than 4 p.m. Sept.

LINCOLN REMEMBRANCE: Halle Library hosts
the traveling exhibition, "Lincoln: The
Constitution
and the Civil War," through Oct. 9. |
- Lincoln Traveling Exhibition
in Halle Library: The Bruce T. Halle Library
helps mark the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial (1809-2009)
as it currently hosts the traveling exhibition "Lincoln:
The Constitution and the Civil War" through Oct.
9. The exhibit is open during normal library hours. Only
25 libraries nationwide will be hosting the exhibition
and Eastern Michigan University has the distinction of
being the first to receive it and the only institution
in Michigan to have this honor. For more information

- EMU launches comprehensive
H1N1 prevention plan: Eastern Michigan
University has launched a comprehensive H1N1 prevention
plan to minimize risks of the swine flu (H1N1 virus)
and seasonal flu. The University's initiatives include
providing up-to-date information to faculty, staff,
students and parents; contingency planning for continuity
of operations in the event of an outbreak; lessons
in proper hand washing; offering informational meetings
for students and employees; and distributing more than
2,500 bottles of hand sanitizer. For more information

digital billboard, located on I-94
at exit 183.

- Promotional
space for new digital billboard available: Eastern
Michigan University provides content for the new
digital billboard, located on I-94 at exit 183, from
September through April each year. Members of the
EMU community who wish to request advertising/promotional
space on the billboard are encouraged to use the
online form at emich.edu/digitalboards.
There is no charge for advertising on the signs.
Placement is not guaranteed. All placements are made
at the discretion of the Marketing Office within
