The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents granted
emeritus status to two former faculty and four staff members
at its regular meeting Sept. 16. To be awarded emeritus
status, faculty must have served EMU for at least 15 years
and be nominated for emeritus faculty status upon retirement.
Staff members who have at least 15 years of service may
be nominated for emeritus status upon retirement.
The faculty
members granted emeritus status are:
Susan C. Kattelus, professor of accounting
and finance, who retired in 2008 after 18 years of service.
Kattelus, of Ypsilanti, served as the department head for
accounting and finance for six years. She is the author
of numerous publications, including the premiere journal
of the accounting discipline, “The Accounting
Review.” She
also is the author of the widely-used textbook, “Accounting
for Governmental and Nonprofit Entities,” and is
a nationally-known authority in the area of governmental
accounting. Kattelus earned her doctorate from Michigan
State University; a master’s degree from Eastern
Michigan University; and a bachelor’s degree from
Michigan State University.

Olson |
Judith A. Olson, professor in the School
of Health Sciences, from 1991-2008. Olson, of San Diego,
Calif., has been called a dedicated educator, researcher
and practitioner who has provided leadership and guidance
to generations of occupational therapy students.
She earned a doctoral degree from Wayne State University;
a master’s
from Columbia University; and a bachelor’s degree
from Mundelein College.
Olson began teaching at EMU in the occupational therapy
program in 1991. She has served as a faculty member, program
director, department head of The Associated Health Professions,
and associate dean of the College of Health and Human Services.
Olson is a well-known scholar in the area of mothering
occupations. She was awarded the College of Health and
Human Services’ Everett Marshall Award for Outstanding
Service in 2007.
Staff members granted emeritus status are:
Dawn Clark, secretary in the department of psychology.
Clark, who retired in November 2001, was employed at Eastern
Michigan for 30 years and rendered exceptional service
to a number of departments. She also served as secretary
to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for 12
years. She is a resident of Ann Arbor.

Heine |
Donna Heine, occupational therapy fieldwork coordinator.
Heine, who retired in June 2008 after 29 years, coordinated
clinical placements for occupational therapy students.
Heine joined the occupational therapy program as an instructor
in 1980, teaching in the undergraduate program. She was
named fieldwork coordinator in 2000. An Ann Arbor resident,
she is the author or co-author of seven publications.
Marsha Kolar, office supervisor, division
of information technology. Kolar, a resident of Ypsilanti,
retired Aug. 1. During her 28 years at EMU, Kolar worked
in a variety of departments, including the EMU pharmacy,
the library, faculty development and information technology.
Karen O’Clair, staff nurse, University
Health Services. O’Clair, of Willis, Mich., has worked
at EMU for 17 years. She was nominated for emeritus status
because of her excellent clinical skills with a strong
customer service focus. While at EMU, O’Clair led
a drug assistance program for uninsured students. In that
role, she helped students obtain support so they could
receive needed medication. She is a graduate of the St.
Luke School of Nursing in North Dakota.
