Professional basketball star George Gervin and actor Dan
Florek were confirmed to receive honorary baccalaureate
degrees from Eastern Michigan University at the Board of
Regents meeting Sept. 16.

Both Florek and Gervin attended EMU; Florek from 1968-75
and Gervin from 1970-72.
Florek has worked for the past 15 years as an actor and
director on the stage, in television and in movies. Since
1990, he has portrayed Capt. Donald Cragen in the television
series’ “Law & Order” and “Law & Order:
Special Victims Unit.” He also has directed several
episodes of the same series.
Florek also has appeared in several feature films, including “Moon
Over Parador,” “Sweet Liberty,” “Angel
Heart” and “Hard Rain.”
Florek’s wife, Karen (Kosinski), and brother Dave,
are both EMU graduates.

Gervin |
Gervin, who made his mark on EMU basketball in the early
70s’, began his professional basketball career in
1972 with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball
Association. He went on to play for the San Antonio Spurs
and the Chicago Bulls in the NBA.
Gervin is a nine-time NBA All-Star (1977-85) and was the
NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1980.
He was named one of the Top 50 Greatest Players in the
history of the NBA and was elected to the Naismith Memorial
Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
Gervin led EMU to the Final Four of the NCAA College Division
National Championship in 1971-72 and earned All-American
honors as a sophomore. He finished his college career with
1,044 points and 562 rebounds. Gervin’s No. 24 was
retired by EMU in 1986.
The honorary degrees will be awarded during Homecoming
Week.
