The following are news briefs about important
activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan.
- Open enrollment period
for healthcare runs through Nov. 2: The annual
open enrollment period for healthcare continues through
Friday, Nov. 2. Eastern Michigan University employees were
recently mailed their Healthcare Options booklets. For
more information or if you have questions, call the Benefits
Office, 487-3195.
- Open forums
scheduled with AVP College of Business candidates:
Candidates for associate vice president for business
and finance will host forums for the campus community.
The schedule is as follows: Andrea Jaeckel, associate
vice president for administration and finance, The
Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, was interviewed
Monday Oct. 15; Aldona Cytraus, associate and principal
and senior operations consultant, Buffalo BioSciences,
LLC, Tuesday Oct. 16; and Leonard Kogut, associate
vice president for administration, Binghamton University,
Thursday Oct. 18. All sessions are scheduled from
2:15-3:15 p.m., 205 Welch. For information, contact

- Open forums scheduled
with director of admissions candidates: Candidates
for director of admissions will host open forums for
the campus community. The schedule is as follows: Kathy
Orscheln, interim director of admissions, Eastern Michigan
University, Tuesday, Oct. 16; Lincoln Morris, senior
director of admissions, Oklahoma City University, Monday,
Oct. 22; Cleveland James, director of recruitment and
admissions, Albany State University, Tuesday, Oct.
23; and Rick Eber, senior regional director, Connect
EDU, Wednesday, Oct. 24. All open forums are scheduled

- Retention Webinar
scheduled Oct. 16: A Webinar, "How
We Retain More Students by Intervening Earlier: Three
First-Hand Case Studies" is scheduled
Tuesday, Oct. 16, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., room 300,
Halle Library. Speakers will share how their institutions
are strengthening student success and retention initiatives
through early attention to incoming students' strengths
and areas of need. The Office of Retention and Student
Success, and the EMU Retention Council invite you to
this Webinar, which includes a question-and-answer

- World Scholars
reception and open house: The EMU community
is invited to the World Scholars Reception and Open
House Wednesday, Oct. 17, 4-6 p.m., G11 Boone Hall,
with a brief program at 4:30 p.m. The event is a
recognition of EMU students who have studied abroad
and faculty who have taught abroad, plus a preview
of upcoming study abroad programs, For more information,

THEATRE MUSICAL: Eastern Michigan
University's
theatre season begins with a
two-week run of "Joseph
and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat." |
- Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Eastern
Michigan University's 2007-2008 season opens with
an extended two-week run of the musical, "Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," with
a preview performance Friday, Oct. 19, 9 p.m., Quirk
Theatre. Phil Simmons, an EMU faculty member, directs
with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim
Rice. The play is based on the story of Joseph, his
11 brothers and father Jacob. The play runs Oct.
20, 25-27, 7 p.m.; and Oct. 21 and 28, 3 p.m. Special
performances are scheduled Oct. 20. 2 p.m., which
is high school Drama Day; and Oct. 24, 10 a.m., for
school groups. Tickets are $15 general admission,
$12 for students, $9 for MAINSTAGE patrons and $6
for children ages 5-12. For tickets, call 487-2282
or purchase them in person at the Convocation Center,
Student Center ticket office or the Quirk Theatre
Box Office.
- Purchasing
card exchange: The
University has changed banks for the Purchasing Card
program. Existing Comerica Purchasing Cards are valid
through the end of October. New JP Morgan Chase Purchasing
Cards will be distributed by the purchasing department
at the following locations and dates: Friday, Oct.
19, and Friday, Oct. 26, 9-11 a.m., Student Center
Auditorium, and 1-3 p.m., Halle Auditorium. The format
will include an overview of the new program, user
information gathering, Comerica card collection and
distribution of Chase cards. If you are unable to
attend one of the sessions, cards will be available
at the purchasing department Monday, Oct. 29. New
cards will be issued only to the cardholder identified
on the card. Additionally, training for details about
online access to cardholder account information for
all cardholders and approvers is required. Training sessions
will be offered by ICT training services. For information,

- Architectural
engineering firms to vie for Mark Jefferson Science
Complex project: The
Mark Jefferson Science Complex Executive Committee
and Advisory Committee will host architectural
engineering firm interviews Friday, Oct. 26, 205
Welch. The EMU community is invited to attend.
Each interview will be two hours, with the first
hour consisting of each firm's presentation and
the second hour serving as a question-and-answer
session. The schedules are as follows: Harley Ellis
Deveraux: 8-10 a.m.; Holibird & Root,
10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and Lord, Aeck, Sargent,

- Order your "Flashback"
Homecoming 2007 donuts: Taste Flashback Fever. Kick off Flashback Homecoming Week
by ordering Krispy Kreme donuts for your office or department
for free. Homecoming Committee members will deliver the
free donuts right to your office beginning at 8 a.m. Monday,
Oct. 22. Quantities are limited. Provide your name, phone
number, office name, office, location and number of staff
members. All orders must be received by Thursday, October

- Teaching
General Education workshops: All full-
and part-time faculty teaching courses in or connected
with the General Education Program (regular courses,
Writing Intensive or Learning Beyond the Classroom)
are invited to participate in a "Teaching
Gen Ed" workshop.
This workshop will provide an opportunity to think about
and plan your Gen Ed course, and to interact with colleagues.
The workshop also will focus on ways to make the new
curriculum more intentional and will address ways to
help students integrate and apply their learning. Assessment
strategies will also be addressed. Workshops are scheduled:
Tuesday, Oct. 23, 1-4 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m. to
noon; or Wednesday, Nov. 14, 1-4 p.m. R.S.V.P. by e-mail
at generaleducation@emich.edu.

- Explore Eastern
scheduled Oct. 30: Eastern Michigan
University's Explore Eastern is a great way for high
school students, transfer students and graduate students
to learn about EMU and how an EMU education can launch
the path to their future. The next Explore Eastern
event is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to
1 p.m. The day begins at the EMU Student Center.

- Flu shots available: University
Health Services is now offering flu vaccinations to the
EMU community. The cost is $30. Vaccination hours are 9
a.m. to noon and 2-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, in Snow Health
Center. University Health Services accepts cash, check,
credit cards or you may use your student account or payroll
deduction. For more information, call 487-1122.
- Thanksgiving
dinner tickets on sale: Tickets for
the 23rd Annual Thanksgiving luncheon are now on
sale. Guests will enjoy roast turkey, carved to order,
with all the holiday trimmings Nov. 13, 11 a.m. and
1 p.m., EMU Student Center Grand Ballroom. This year,
tickets must be purchased either in person or by
phone (no e-mails). Cost is $12.50 for faculty and
staff, and $11 for students. Tickets may be purchased
Monday-Friday at the following locations: Convocation
Center, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Student Center Ticket
Office, noon to 9 p.m.; or the Quirk-Sponberg Theatres
Ticket Office, noon to 5 p.m. All ticket offices
share the same phone number 487-2282 (as always,
first-come, first-serve). Cash, check, charge card,
banner numbers and requisitions will be accepted.
Seatings are limited for each buffet. Fifty cents from
each ticket will be donated to Food Gatherers. For more
