A FRIENDLY CLIMATE: Eastern Michigan University
recently received a 4.5 out of 5 overall rating
from
the Campus Climate Index, which rates how
LGBT-
friendly college campuses are. |
The Campus Climate Index is an online national assessment
tool that provides lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered
(LGBT) students with information about policies, programs
and practices for universities and colleges across the
nation.
Scores are awarded in 10 categories, including: sexual
orientation, gender identity/expression, LGBT policy inclusion,
LGBT support and institutional commitment, student life,
academic life, housing and residence life, campus safety,
counseling and health, and recruitment and retention.
EMU received the highest scores (5 out of 5 stars) in
the categories of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression,
support and institutional commitment, student life, and
counseling and health.
"We have a very open community at EMU," wrote a 19-year-old
female. "Students can see that there is support there,
if they need it. A good example of this is the Coming Out/Being
Out Support Group, as well as the multiple LGBT student
organizations."
"EMU offers multiple opportunities for LGBT students.
First, we have a fully staffed, very active lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgendered resource center on campus," said
Brindle. "The LGBTRC advocates for and addresses the needs
of students, faculty and staff regarding issues related
to sexual orientation and gender identity."
