Eastern Michigan University's polymers and coatings technology
students won three awards at the recent International Coatings
Expo and Conference in Toronto, October 1-5.
Through two oral and six poster presentations, EMU students
showcased their research accomplishments on the cutting-edge
polymers and coatings technologies.
Achin Goel, a graduate student; Ravi Joshi, a doctoral
student; and Vijay Mannari, associate professor, school
of engineering technology, Coatings Research Institute,
won the Alfred L. Hendry Award for the best student paper.
The students were awarded $1,000, and $500 was presented
to EMU. Goel and Joshi are from India.
"This year's Hendry award competition was especially tough
and we congratulate EMU's students and faculty for outstanding
contribution to the field of coatings" said Yasmin Sayed-Sweet,
president, Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology.
Dustin
England, a graduate student from Bremen, Indiana, won second
place and $300 for his poster presentation, "Reversibly
Porating Coatings." The
poster was co-authored by graduate students Hong Gu and
Feng Yan, and professor John Texter.
Sarjak Amin, a graduate student from India, won fourth place for his poster
presentation, "Comparison of Fe, Al and Mg Alloys via DC Electrochemical Techniques." Co-authors
were graduate students F. Floyd, Sundaresan Avudaiappan, Chirag Patel, Askarali
Thathajohnpasha and Sumeet Tatti, and Ted Provder, director of the Coatings
Research Institute.
"Participation in the conference and recognition for their work gives tremendous
encouragement to our students. It also gives them a feel of the industrial
world and opportunities for networking," said Mannari of EMU's polymers and
coating technology program. "The students were very excited about their recognition
and their wonderful experience."
