CELEBRATING
HERITAGE: Eastern
Michigan University kicked off its celebration
of Native American Heritage Month Nov.
9 with a humorous and provocative lecture
by Sherman Alexi (above), a gifted and
accomplished storyteller.
Sherman's first young-adult novel, "The
Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," was
released in September. He also is well-known
for his screenplay, "Smoke Signals," a
movie that was released in 1998. This event
was co-sponsored by the Native American Student
Organization, Diversity and Community Involvement,
the Honors College and the English Department. Photo
