The following are news briefs about important
activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

FOR THE CHILDREN: EMu Athletics will be
partnering with the Toys for Tots Program during
the men's basketball game against Detroit Nov.

- Athletics partners
with Toys for Tots: EMU Athletics
will be partnering with the Toys for Tots Program
during the men’s basketball game against
Detroit Wednesday, Nov. 28. Anyone that brings
a new, unwrapped toy to the game will receive complimentary
admission to the game. Fans who do not bring a
toy will be able to purchase one on-site at the
Toys for Tots table to make their donation right
there. Fans can make their donation in the atrium
of the Convocation Center, where they will receive
a voucher that can be redeemed at the ticket window
for a complimentary ticket. Fans making a donation
also will receive a discounted coupon to the concession
stand. This year marks the 60th year of the Toys
for Tots program, a tradition of the United States
Marine Corps Reserves that has helped provide more
than 370 million toys to more than 173 million
needy children since its inception in 1947. For

- Nominations
sought for Lecturers Award: The Provost's
Office is now accepting nominations for the 2006-2007
EMU Full-Time Lecturers Outstanding Teaching Award.
This award provides the formal opportunity to honor
outstanding full-time lecturers for their dedication
to students' education, as well as demonstrates the
value placed in them by the institution. The recipient
may be a full-time lecturer, with one or more years
of full-time teaching at Eastern Michigan University.
Nominations are to be submitted to the appropriate
head or director by Dec. 7. The recipient selected
will receive a $1,000 one-time, lump-sum award (not
included in the lecturer's base salary) and a plaque
commemmorating his or her achievement. A luncheon
will be scheduled during the winter 2008 semester
to recognize the award recipient. For nomination

- Hiring compliance
workshop: Human Resources will host a hiring
compliance workshop Wednesday, Nov. 28, 3-4:30 p.m.,
room 310B, Student Center. The workshop will include
information on I-9 processing, Social Security Administration
guidelines for name verification and name changes; an
overview of the hiring process in general categories;
common problems/trouble spots; expediting PAFs, payroll
dates and guidelines; and a Web time entry overview.
The workshop is recommended for those who handle the
hiring process for their department, who are new to the
University or who wish to take a refresher session on
this topic.
- Campus Camp
Wellstone: Know
any student activists? Campus Camp Wellstone is a 1
1/2-day training program taking place on campuses around
the country. It is nonpartisan and welcomes both seasoned
activists and campus leaders as well as those who are
completely new to progressive activism. Skills that will
be taught include: leadership development, understanding
power, strategic campaign planning, how to work with
the media, motivating and mobilizing people for action
and more. Campus
Camp Wellstone is scheduled Nov. 30, 3-9 p.m.; and
Dec. 1, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., room 300, Student Center. Only

- Holiday Home
Tour: Visitors
can weave their way from the 19th to the 21st century,
by day or by candlelight, during the 11th Annual Historic
Ypsilanti Holiday Homes Tour, Saturday, Dec. 1, 6-10
p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 2, noon to 4:30 p.m. The benefit
for Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels will take visitors from
an 1848 Greek Revival to the University House, completed
in 2003. Whether you prefer the formal hanging of the
greens or can appreciate a twist in holiday traditions,
the tour promises diversity behind each door. The cost
for the Candlelight Tour (limited) is $40 per person.
Tickets are available at The Nelson Amos Studio, 9 E.
Cross St., in Ypsilanti’s Depot
Town. Tickets for the Sunday tour are $15 in advance,
$20 the day of tour. Tickets can be purchased in Ypsilanti
at Haab’s Restaurant, Quinn’s Essentials,
Eleven West Spa and in Belleville at Katherine Rose.

- Faded ID card replacement: Attention, faculty and staff. Is the photo on your
new ID card fading? The Eagle Card office recognizes that,
due to a problem with the card printer, some photos on
the new IDs have begun to fade. The printer has been fixed
and we would like to replace these cards for free. If you
would like your faded card replaced, please bring your
current ID to the Eagle Card office and we will print a
new card while you wait. The Eagle Card office is open
Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday,
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For questions, call 487-3176.
- Flu shots available: University
Health Services is still offering flu vaccinations to
the EMU community. The cost is $30. Vaccination hours
are 9 a.m. to noon and 2-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, in Snow
Health Center. University Health Services accepts cash,
check, credit cards or you may use your student account
or payroll deduction. For more information, call 487-1122.

Wilder Christmas: EMU Theatre presents"A
Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas" Dec. 1, 2 and
8, 3 p.m.; and Dec. 1 and 7-8, 7 p.m., Sponberg Theatre.
Directed by Patricia Moore Zimmer and written by
Laurie Brooks,
"A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas" is an
endearing family story based on the characters of
the popular
"Little House" book series. Forced to leave
the farm they love, the Ingalls family moves to a
small village to manage a hotel. The family is introduced
to Johnny Steadman, "the worst boy in Iowa," and
Mrs. Starr, a wealthy woman whose beloved doll collection
catches Laura's eye. Facing the adversity of her
family's situation, spunky daughter Laura discovers
the strength and courage within herself to help in
any way she can, even if it means personal sacrifice.
Ticket prices are $15 for general admission, $9 for
MAINSTAGE patrons and $6 for children, ages 5-12.

Office of Continuous Improvement and Planning hosts Stephen
Spangehl, director of the Academic Quality Improvement
Program (AQIP), The Higher Learning Commission, Thursday,
Dec. 6. Sessions with Shangehl are: Assessment, Accreditation
and Systems Portfolio, 9:30-11:30 a.m.; AQIP Project
Sharing, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Brown
Bag Lunch/Networking, 12:30-1:30 p.m.; Challenges to
Higher Education, 1:45-2:45 p.m.; and General Overview
of AQIP/Action Projects, 3-4 p.m. All sessions will be
in room 310A/B of the Student Center. The sessions
are open to the campus community and the publi. For

- GOLD wine-tasting
social: Socialize
and sample fine wines with Graduates of the Last Decade
(GOLD). The Office for Alumni Relations is hosting a
wine tasting social for GOLD alumni and friends Thursday,
Dec. 6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Grape Expectations
Wine Bar in Plymouth (555 Forest Ave.). Participants
will survey six wine selections paired with an elegant
array of satisfying appetizers, including vegetarian
options. Space is limited, and the R.S.V.P. deadline
is Monday, Dec. 3. The cost is $25 per person. Register
