on avian flu: James VandenBosch, professor
of biology, presents, "Avian
Flu: A Microbiologist's View," Wednesday, Nov. 30, 6:30-7:45
p.m., Multipurpose Room, Village Commons. Avian influenza
is in the headlines. What is it? Is the concern all hype
or is there a real danger? Should we be getting flu shots
or stockpiling antiviral drugs? This talk will begin
with the basic biology of the influenza virus and human
defenses, and will briefly review influenza pandemics
and public health measures to control them. VandenBosch
also will discuss the unique nature of the H5N1 avian
flu and the challenges it presents for vaccine development
and drug treatment. This event is free and open to the
public. Light refreshments will be provided. For more
information, call Rebecca Russell, 487-0341.

epidemic and what the country is doing to prepare for
such an event will be discussed at a bird flu panel

McKenny Union. Patricia Somsel, from the Michigan Department
of Community Health; Duane Newton, from the Microbiology/Virology
