Eastern Michigan University's Board of Regents approved
an honorary degree for Congressman John D. Dingell, Jr.
at its regular meeting Nov. 15.
Dingell will be honored with a doctorate of public service,
which will be presented at commencement Dec. 18. Dingell
also was recently confirmed as this year's keynote commencement
speaker.

Dingell, a Democrat, is the Dean of the United States
House of Representatives and has represented Detroit since
1955. Over the past five decades he has written
some of the best-known laws protecting the environment
and on health issues, as well as on the rights of workers
and consumers. He authored the 1990 Clean Air Act and fought
for the passage of the Endangered Species Act. He also
took a leading role in creating the "Do Not Call" list
in 2003.
Congressman Dingell will celebrate his 50th anniversary
in the U.S. House Dec. 13. Only two other House Members
have served as long, Rep. Carl Vinson of Georgia and Rep.
Jamie Whitten of Mississippi.
