    WALK THE LINE:
    Candidates for executive
    director of public safety
    will host campus forums
    this week and next.

    DPS safety forums scheduled: The campus community is invited to participate in an open forum with each of the candidates for Executive Director of Public Safety. All forums are scheduled from 2:30-3:30 p.m., 201 Welch Hall. Candidate forums are: Adam Garcia, Director of Police Services, University of Nevada, Wednesday, Dec. 5; Charles Noffsinger, Police Captain, Department of Public Safety, The University of Michigan, Friday, Dec. 7; Gregory O'Dell, Deputy Chief, City of Ann Arbor Police Department, Wednesday, Dec. 12.   • Celebration of Student Writing: Celebrate writing! The semi-annual Celebration of Student Writing takes place Wednesday, Dec. 5, 4-5:30 p.m., EMU Student Center Ballroom. Join more than 800 students from English 121 as they share multi-media creations based on their research work from that class, conducted over the last semester.   • EMU to host AQIP visitor: The Office of Continuous Improvement and Planning hosts Stephen Spangehl, director of the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP), The Higher Learning Commission, Thursday, Dec. 6. Sessions with Spangehl are: Assessment, Accreditation and Systems Portfolio, 9:30-11:30 a.m.; AQIP Project Sharing, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Brown Bag Lunch/Networking, 12:30-1:30 p.m.; Challenges to Higher Education, 1:45-2:45 p.m.; and General Overview of AQIP/Action Projects, 3-4 p.m. All sessions will be in room 310A/B of the Student Center.     full-time lecturer in the College of
    Business's Department of Management,
    was the recipient of last year's Full-Time
    Lecturers Outstanding Teaching Award.
    This year's nomination deadline is Friday,
    Dec. 7.

    Nominations sought for Lecturers Award: The Provost's Office is now accepting nominations for the 2006-2007 EMU Full-Time Lecturers Outstanding Teaching Award. This award provides the formal opportunity to honor outstanding full-time lecturers for their dedication to students' education, as well as demonstrates the value placed in them by the institution. The recipient may be a full-time lecturer with one or more years of full-time teaching at Eastern Michigan University. Nominations are to be submitted to the appropriate head or director by Friday, Dec. 7. The recipient selected will receive a $1,000 one-time, lump-sum award (not included in the lecturer's base salary) and a plaque commemorating his or her achievement.   • TIAA-CREF counseling sessions: TIAA-CREF will offer EMU staff and faculty an individual personal financial counseling session Dec. 11 and Dec. 13, room 302, Halle Library.   • MPSERS pre-retirement information meetings: A number of informational meetings have been scheduled for employees enrolled in the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System (MPSERS). These meetings will help employees understand their retirement plan as well as plan for retirement. Meetings are scheduled Jan. 7, Feb. 19 and April 22, 5:30 p.m., Washtenaw ISD, Ann Arbor.   • Undergraduate Symposium: Students, with the support of their faculty sponsor, who are ready to submit a nomination to present at the 2008 Undergraduate Symposium, may now go to http://db1.emich.edu/symposium08 to complete the online process. Nominations must be completed online by the deadline of Jan. 16, 2008. The Undergraduate Symposium is scheduled Friday, March 28, 2008, in the Student Center.   • United Way campaign surpasses goal: Eastern Michigan University's United Way campaign recently surged past its $110,000 goal, raising $115,038 as of Nov. 27. The total includes 27 Leadership Givers, 26 Labor Leads and 65 Caring Club members. The number of total gifts was 671. Campaign co-chairs and Steering Committee members will celebrate with a campaign wrap-up event Friday, Dec. 7, 9:30 a.m., Student Center. For more information, call Holly Smith, 487-2211.
