Kurta |
Alan Kurta,
professor of biology, has received a nearly $113,000 grant
from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to study
the evening bat. The species is native to the South, and
the DNR says it's rarely been seen in Michigan. Kurta and
graduate students discovered the colony of about 40 bats
near Palmyra in 2004. The two-year project seeks to answer
questions like what the species needs to survive in Michigan
and how it's faring on the northern edge of its range.
For the third year in
a row, readers of the Ann Arbor News have given WEMU the
gold award for "Best Radio Station, Music" in
their third annual "Best of" readers" survey.
WEMU also took the bronze award for "Best Radio Station,
Talk."
Eric
Deslauriers, a senior
wide receiver, and Andrew Wellock, senior
place kicker, were named to the First-Team All Mid-American
Conference Football Team. Junior defensive end Jason
Jones was named to the second
team. Deslauriers completed his EMU career with school
records in touchdown catches (27), receptions (248)
and receiving yards (3,250). Wellock, who garnered first-team
honors for the third straight year, made 69 of 87 career
field goal attempts and had 20 career field goals from
40 yards or beyond. He completed his career as EMU's all-time
leading scorer with 299 points and ranks seventh in the
MAC in career scoring for a kicker. Jones finished fifth
in the nation in tackles-for-loss with 18.5 for 71 yards.
He accumulated 57 total tackles to rank sixth and tied
for the team lead in sacks with four.

Nowitzke |
Corey Nowitzke,
an Eastern Michigan University senior, placed 30th overall
(31:36.5) out of 250 runners at the NCAA Cross Country
Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Nov. 20. With his effort
in the 10K event, Nowitze garnered All-American honors
for cross country. He was the 18th American to finish,
with the top 25 receiving the honor. Nowitzke had won the
Great Lakes Regional and was the Mid-American Conference's
individual champion.
Susan Gregory,
associate professor of human and environmental consumer
resources, has been honored with the Stephenson W. Fletcher
Award for outstanding achievement in the field of hospitality
and tourism education. The International Council of Hotel,
Restaurant and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) presented
Gregory with the award for her innovative ideas, methods
and programs for advanced teachings.

Ligibel |
Ted Ligibel,
professor of historic preservation, has been elected president
of the National Council for Preservation Education. It
is the first time someone from Michigan has been head of
this organization.
Steven Gillis,
a lecturer in writing at EMU, has been awarded runner-up in the Storyglossia
Fiction Prize 2006 contest for his story, "The
Society for the Protection of Animals." His story was
published in the Prize Issue Oct. 31, 2006.
The Children's Institute
was awarded a Michigan Department of Education Grant for $165,000 to
provide a Full-Day School Readiness Program for At-Risk 4-year-old children.
The EMU women's softball
team posted the eighth-highest team
GPA in Division I collegiate softball, and was recognized
by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
The overall GPA of the women's softball team was 3.419.
This marks the third consecutive year the EMU
women's softball team has been recognized by the NFCA.
In 2004, EMU posted the top GPA in the nation with
a 3.5552 mark and the 2005 team finished sixth with
a 3.461 GPA.
Megan Coleman and
Caitlin Ridgely, both EMU dance majors, competed
in the "National Society
of Arts and Letters Competition, Michigan Chapter." Coleman
won first place, a $500 scholarship, and a trip to compete
in Nationals. Ridgely won third place and a $250 scholarship.
This is the first time in EMU history that it has had
state winners. Coleman went on to compete at Nationals
in Jacksonville, Fla., in May 2006.

Ed Sidlow,
professor of political
science, was recently featured on the Paul W. Smith Show
on WJR Radio. The topic was the gubernatorial debate. Sidlow
also was featured in the Oct. 22, question-and-answer
feature.
Bob England,
director of the Rec/IM, was recently voted into the Ypsilanti
High School Hall of Fame. England graduated from Ypsilanti
in 1962. He played football, wrestling and baseball.
Greg
Peoples, University ombudsman, was
recently elected to serve a three-year term on the Board
of Directors for the Michigan Association of School Boards
(MASB). Board members elected him from schools in
Region 7, which is school districts in Washtenaw, Jackson,
and Monroe Counties. MASB provides quality educational
leadership services for all Michigan boards of education,
and advocates for student achievement and public education.
Paula Dysktra,
assistant to the vice president for enrollment services,
was recently installed as president of the Michigan Association
of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO)
for 2007. The last president of the association from
EMU was Everett Marshall in 1960.
