The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

  • Halle Library has extended exam schedule: To provide support for completion of projects, papers and preparation for exams, Halle Library will extend operations on the two weekends prior to the end of the semester and each day during exam week. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday, Dec. 11, and Wednesday, Dec. 12, 7:30 a.m. to midnight. Exam Week: Thursday, Dec. 13, 7:30 a.m.-1 a.m.; Friday, Dec. 14, 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 15, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 16, 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Monday, Dec. 17, and Tuesday, Dec. 18, 7:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.; and Wednesday, Dec. 19, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 487-0020, extension 2100.

  • Student Center has special hours: The EMU Student Center will have extended building hours on selected days leading up to finals, then reduced hours through the close of the semester Friday, Dec. 21. Vendor business hours will vary. During the semester break, the Student Center will be closed from Saturday, Dec. 22, through Tuesday, January 1, 2008. The modified hours of operation are: Tuesday, Dec. 11, through Thursday, Dec. 13, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Friday, Dec. 14, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday, Dec. 15, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Sunday, Dec. 16, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Monday, Dec. 17, and Tuesday Dec. 18, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 19, and Thursday, Dec. 20, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 21, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 22, through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, CLOSED; Wednesday, Jan. 2, through Friday, Jan. 4, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and, Sunday, Jan. 6 (orientation), 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular hours resume Monday, Jan. 7 (first day of classes).   • DPS safety forum: The campus community is invited to participate in an open forum with the last of four candidates for executive director of the Department of Public Safety. Gregory O'Dell, Deputy Chief, City of Ann Arbor Police Department, will host an open forum Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2:30-3:30 p.m., 201 Welch Hall.   • Steak and egg holiday breakfast: Eastern Eateries hosts its annual Steak & Egg Holiday Breakfast Wednesday, Dec. 12, 7 a.m. to noon. The menu includes steak, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, Belgium waffles, muffins, cinnamon rolls, donuts, danish, fruit salad and a large beverage. Cost is $6.10. Eastern Eateries accepts Meal Plan, Flex, Cash, E Dollars, Eagle Express and University requisitions. Eastern Eateries is located between Phelps-Sellers and Walton-Putnam residence halls.   • Winter clothing drive: The Women's and Gender Studies Student Association sponsors a winter clothing drive through Monday, Dec. 17. Blankets, warm clothing, socks, coats, mittens, scarves and hats are needed. Winter clothes collected will benefit the Salvation Army homeless shelter of Monroe County.   • Bookstore buyback: Textbook Buyback takes place through Friday, Dec. 21, at the EMU Bookstore, on the first floor of the EMU Student Center. The EMU Bookstore also will buy books Dec. 13-19 at the Mark Jefferson science building. Students who sell their textbooks at the EMU Bookstore also will receive a 20-percent discount coupon good on all EMU clothing and gifts. Textbooks are accepted regardless of where they were originally purchased. EMU Bookstore hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.   • Competitive Edge holiday sale: From now through Dec. 21, you can save 20 percent on your holiday purchases at The Competitive Edge Pro Shop, located in the Rec/IM.   • MPSERS hosts pre-retirement information meetings: A number of informational meetings have been scheduled for employees enrolled in the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System (MPSERS). These meetings will help employees understand their retirement plan as well as plan for retirement. Meetings are scheduled Jan. 7, Feb. 19 and April 22, 5:30 p.m., Washtenaw ISD, Ann Arbor.   • MLK Celebration community service project: The EMU MLK Planning Committee hosts a "Bowl 'n' Stroll" Bowling Fundraiser to benefit a local charity organization. If you are a bowler or even if you aren't, please come and support this effort. The event is scheduled Saturday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Ypsi-Arbor Lanes. Cost is $100 per team of five bowlers, includes up to three games and bowling shoes. The event is limited to the first 40 teams. Reservations will be taken through Jan. 10.   • Undergraduate Symposium nominations sought: Students — with the support of their faculty sponsor — who are ready to submit a nomination to present at the 2008 Undergraduate Symposium, may now go to http://db1.emich.edu/symposium08 to complete the online process. Nominations must be completed online by the deadline of Jan. 16, 2008. The Undergraduate Symposium is scheduled Friday, March 28, 2008, in the Student Center.   • Get nutrition advice: The Office of Nutrition Services offers nutrition counseling on topics such as healthy eating, weight management, and sports nutrition. The office also performs body fat, muscle mass analysis and much more. A registered dietitian and student dietitians are available to answer your nutrition questions.   • MLK Honor Awards nominations sought: Nominations for the 2008 Martin Luther King, Jr. Honor Awards are currently being accepted.
