Longtime EMU grounds supervisor dies

By Leigh Soltis

Jimmy Ray Forester Sr., a grounds supervisor at Eastern Michigan University since 1984, died Dec. 1. He was 58.

"I had the pleasure of working with Jim for over six years and he will always be remembered as a hard-working and dedicated man that enjoyed helping others," said Anthony Catner, associate vice president, business and finance-facilities. "It takes special and genuine persons to perform the hard work these folks do, and I am proud that we had such a dedicated worker such as Jim."

Forester was born in Bell County, Kentucky. He moved to Ypsilanti, where he was married and resided until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Lou Jones; four children, Paula Forester-Market, Jimmy Ray Forester, Olie Forester and Carlo Forester; two sisters, Judy Gaulf and Charlene Divorsky; a brother, Bob Forester; 16 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

"Over the years, Jim and I shared many stories, and one could not help noticing how much love he had for his family," said Catner. "During this time of deep sorrow, I am uplifted by the knowledge that Jim leaves behind so many loved ones, friends and positive memories."

Funeral services took place Dec. 5 at the Janowiak Funeral Home in Ypsilanti. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army.
