The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

  • MPSERS meetings: The Office of Retirement Services is offering pre-retirement information meetings for all employees who participate in the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System (MPSERS). Meetings are scheduled as follows: Tuesday, Dec. 14; Feb. 13, 2006; April 18, 2006; and May 15, 2006, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Washtenaw ISD, Vogel Room A, B, C, 1819 S. Wagner Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48106.   • Call for presentations and papers: The Arab American National Museum (AANM) is seeking proposals for panels and papers to be presented at its Arab Americans in the Arts Forum. The forum is scheduled March 31-April 2, 2006, at the AANM in Dearborn. Topics include performing arts: dance, theater and music; visual arts: painting, photography, sculpture and calligraphy; media arts: film and video; and literature: poetry, fiction and non-fiction. The purpose of the forum is to generate dialogue among the AANM's audiences and artists about the state of Arab American art-making and to document the contributions of Arab Americans in the above mentioned fields. For submission information, call (313) 624-0200. The deadline for proposal submission is Thursday, Dec. 15. Entrants will be notified of acceptance by Jan. 10, 2006.
  • Reward offered for information regarding King Hall fire: The Michigan Arson Prevention Association is offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of anyone on arson charges in relation to the Nov. 27 King Hall fire that damaged the offices of Student Judicial Services. If you have a tip, please call toll free 1-800-44-ARSON or go to the Department of Public Safety Web site at http://www.emich.edu/publicsafety/police.htm and click on DPStips to write an e-mail and leave a tip.
  • Free ride: EMU graduates and their families can save some time and aggravation by parking in the Rynearson Lot on Commencement Day Sunday, Dec. 18. From noon-5 p.m., the Department of Public Safety is providing FREE shuttle bus rides for graduates and their families. Two AATA buses will begin the pick-up service at noon. Drop-off service will end at 5 p.m. Call 487-3122.
  • Pick up new University I.D. card: Attention all faculty and staff. If you have not yet visited the Eagle Card office to get your new University I.D. card, please stop by before Thursday, Dec. 22. As of Jan. 1, 2006, all previous cards will no longer work. Please bring a current ID or a driver's license with you. The Eagle Card office is located at 21 McKenny (lower level), and is open Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, contact the Eagle Card Office, 487-3176.
  • Distinguished Faculty Award nominations due Jan. 6: The Division of Academic Affairs is currently accepting applications for the 2005 Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards. The awards, each worth $3,500, are given annually in four categories: Teaching I, Teaching II, Scholarly/Creative Activity and Service to the University. Nomination forms and supporting documents must be submitted to the appropriate department head by Jan. 6, 2006. Winners will be formally announced during the Faculty Awards Ceremony in the McKenny Union Ballroom March 29, 2006.   • Call for Alumni Award nominations: EMU's Alumni Association is beginning the selection process to determine alumni who will be honored at the 45th Annual Alumni Awards. Please help us identify alumni who are highly successful, are leaders in their communities, and have shown an ongoing commitment to EMU, by submitting a nomination. You may review criteria and download an application at www.emich.edu/alumni/awards. When nominating, please provide a complete application and a letter of nomination. Please forward your nomination to the Office for Alumni Relations at 1349 S. Huron Street, Suite 2, no later than Friday, Jan. 13. For questions, call 487-0250.

    EMU MLK Celebration runs Jan. 12-18: Former NFL star and current Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page will be the keynote speaker for the 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration at EMU. President's Luncheon tickets for the Jan. 16, 2006 event are $32 for individuals and $15 for EMU students, and can be purchased by calling the Convocation Center Box Office, 487-2282. There is a lot more to the celebration; more than 30 events are planned over a one-week period. A complete list of events is online at http://cot.emich.edu/mlk/events2.htm.
