The moment many Eastern Michigan University students have
been waiting for is drawing near.
More than 1,600 EMU students are eligible to walk during
commencement ceremonies Sunday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. in the
Convocation Center.
Those eligible include 1,100 undergraduates, 495 graduate
students and 80 who will receive post-baccalaureate certificates.
Doctoral candidates are John Selmon, Thomas Reeder, Ryan
Kelley, Virginia Bell and Michele Coyne.

Congressman John D. Dingell, Jr. is this year's commencement
speaker and he will be honored with a doctorate of public
service.
Dingell, a Democrat, is the Dean of the United States
House of Representatives and has represented Detroit since
1955. Over the past five decades, he has written some of
the best-known laws protecting the environment and on health
issues, as well as on the rights of workers and consumers.
He authored the 1990 Clean Air Act and fought for the passage
of the Endangered Species Act. He also took a leading role
in creating the "Do Not Call" list in 2003.
Congressman Dingell celebrated his 50th anniversary in
the U.S. House Dec. 13. Only two other House Members have
served as long, Rep. Carl Vinson of Georgia and Rep. Jamie
Whitten of Mississippi.
Daryl Barton, president of the Faculty Council, will serve
as grand marshal.
Doors to the Convocation Center open at 12:30 p.m.
All guests must
have a ticket to be admitted. Handicapped seating is available
and there will be a signer to aid those with a hearing
impairment. To

A free shuttle, provided to graduates and their families,
will run from the main campus North Lot and Bowen Lot parking
structure to the Convocation Center from noon-5 p.m. For
