President Fallon announces University Visioning Task Force

By Ron Podell

When Eastern Michigan University President John Fallon outlined his goals to campus in early fall, he said he envisioned the day when 10 of 10 people on campus, if asked, would be able to provide the same answer relative to EMU's mission.

That process took a step forward when a University Visioning Task Force — assigned to come up with a visioning statement — met for the first time Dec. 6. Fallon and Daryl Barton, president of the Faculty Council, are co-chairing the task force.

"The Task Force's goal will be to create a five-to-seven-page document that will represent a shared vision — a picture of our pathway to the future and what we as a University intend to pursue with great vigor," Fallon said in his Dec. 9 periodic update to campus. "In the next few weeks, we will launch a visioning Web site so that everyone will have access to the work of the group."

Once the Web site is operational, it will be listed on EMU Today, he said.

"It is important to involve the entire campus in this project," Barton said.

Other members of the University's Visioning Task Force are:

Kristine Ajrouch, associate professor, sociology, and director of the gerentology program.

Daniel Cicchini, vice president, student government.

Richard Clifford, elevator repair specialist, physical plant.

Ellen Gold, director, University Health Services, Snow Health Center.

Konnie Kustron, professor, College of Technology.

Bernice Lindke, assistant vice president for enrollment services.

David Mielke, dean, College of Business.

Robert Neely, senior associate vice president for academic affairs.

Vernon Polite, dean, College of Education.

Vicki Reaume, director, Alumni Relations.

Gary Reffitt, director, purchasing and communications.

Lynn Rocklage, department head, special education.

Deborah Silverman, assistant professor, School of Health Sciences.

Judy Sturgis Hill, interim director of diversity.

Suzanne Szopo, instructional technology, Halle Library.

Larry Ward, director of facility maintenance, physical plant.

In addition to the formation of the University Visioning Task Force, Fallon announced the launching of a "Building the Promise" Web site for the purpose of allowing the EMU community and friends to share their ideas, thoughts, suggestions, concerns and dreams about EMU. The site is at www.emich.edu/promise where an online form is available to share input.

"We ask you to identify yourself so that I might know with whom I am interacting, and to make it possible to have a two-way conversation," Fallon said. "At the same time, we recognize that some individuals may only feel free to speak candidly in an anonymous setting. Therefore, we have provided the option for anonymous use of the form. We respect your privacy and will only collect information that you expressly provide on the form. All responses to this online form will be sent to me. I encourage you to use this medium for sharing your ideas, thoughts and suggestions as to how we can "Build the Promise" that is EMU."
