The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

  • FOCUS EMU takes holiday break: FOCUS EMU will not be published Dec. 21 due to the Christmas holiday, but will return to its regular electronic publishing schedule Tuesday, Jan. 11. University Communications wishes the EMU community happy holidays.
  • Holiday break reminder: Eastern Michigan University will be closed beginning Friday, Dec. 24, through Monday, Jan. 3, in observance of the year-end holidays. The campus reopens Tuesday, Jan. 4, and classes begin Wednesday, Jan. 5. Call 487-4400.

  • Holiday gift drive: The Women's Studies Student Association (WSSA) invites you to participate in its 2004 gift drive to benefit survivors of sexual and domestic violence. During SafeHouse's holiday gift distribution Dec. 19 and Dec. 21-22, the association invites survivors to select gifts for their family and themselves. WSSA will collect new, unwrapped gifts in 215 Rackham (Undergraduate Studies) or 714 Pray-Harrold (Women's Studies office) until Wednesday, Dec. 15. Items needed include: women's clothing (all sizes), children's clothing (all sizes), educational books, gift certificates and housewarming gifts.     Create a successful New Year's resolution: Thinking of making a New Year's resolution or just interested in learning how to be successful when creating goals? The Employee Wellness Program offers a wellness workshop with tips on how to create realistic resolutions and, more importantly, how to stick with them.     MLK President's Luncheon tickets on sale: Tickets for the 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Day President's Luncheon are now on sale. The luncheon is scheduled Monday, Jan. 17, noon, Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest, Lakeshore Ballroom. Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, the first woman to be elected to that position in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, the oldest African-American denomination in the United States, will give brief remarks as a preview of her afternoon keynote address. Tickets can be purchased at the EMU Convocation Center Box Office, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and the Quirk Theatre Box Office, Monday-Friday, noon-5 p.m.; by phone, 487-2282; or order online at http://www.emich.edu/convocation/events.htm. Tickets can be purchased for full tables of 10, or by the individual seat. Prices are $30 for the general public and $15 for EMU students. Tickets can be paid by University requisition (box office only), cash, check or credit card.
  • Alumni Award nominations due Jan. 14: The Office for Alumni Relations is now accepting nominations for the 2005 Alumni Awards. To nominate someone for an award, please go to www.emich.edu/alumni/awards/awards_a.html and download a nomination form. Completed nominations must be returned to alumni relations by Jan. 14, 2005.   • Eating disorder conference scheduled Jan. 14: An eating disorder conference is scheduled Jan. 14, 2005, in McKenny Union. The conference, sponsored by Nutrition Services and the Eating Disorder League, will cover the causes, treatment and prognosis of eating disorders.
