INTERRUPTIONS  screen print

Brief Statement:

I have been experimenting with emulsion applications and ink additives to enhance the surface of screen prints. Although the traditional surface of the screen print is "poster-like" or flat, I have created a surface that is self-reflecting and gives the illusion of depth. The surface cracks, stretches and indents. The print possesses a physical depth - a third dimension. Manipulating the surface enhances and reveals the content of the piece, adding surprise and mystery to the minimal image.

The simplicity of my images forces viewers to concentrate on what is seen. There is a subtle transformation of the obvious -- shades of feelings and thoughts -- that can be shared only through a prolonged viewing, not a superficial glance. Visual movements can be easily overlooked unless viewers take the time to actually see them.

Recently I have expanded the "high-relief" process to oversize prints. These oversized prints are approximately 30" X 50", and I have been exhibiting them without matte or frame in a scroll fashion (viewers can see the surface better and even touch it). I am now experimenting with printing on surfaces other than paper. This will require separate emulsion applications, different ink additives and more inventive printing techniques.
