Considering Hip-Hop Jewelry.” Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Williams received her Ph.D. in art history from Yale University. She specializes on art of the African Diaspora, African art, African-American art, Latin American art, and museum studies. Date TBA (Map) DAVID GOYER EMU Student Center Auditorium, Wednesday, January 24, 8 p.m. (Map) LECTURE BY KRISTIN BEAVER, PAINTER Wayne State University art professor Kristin Beaver makes larger than life portraits of herself and friends in cinematic poses inspired by contemporary fashion and music. Dramatic lighting illuminates “hip” subjects who position themselves in photo-shoot type environments with an air of indifferent panache. Beaver’s paintings expose the self-aware nature of the subject’s style choices and allow the viewer to embrace the human being beneath the façade. Meadowbrook Art Gallery in Rochester held a solo exhibition of Beaver’s work in March/April 2006. EMU Student Center Auditorium, Wednesday, April 4, 8 p.m. (Map) LECTURE BY MICHAEL RAY CHARLES, PAINTER Professor of painting at the University of Texas at Austin, Charles creates graphically styled works that investigate racial stereotypes drawn from the history of American advertising, product packaging, billboards, radio jingles, and television commercials. The work is highly charged and provocative and spans a number of media. Charles has an extensive exhibition record and was recently featured in the popular PBS series art: 21. |
