Learning Beyond the Classroom (LBC) for General Education

  • What is LBC?
    • A university education is about more than just classes. Students involved in activities outside the classroom have higher retention rates and more positive educational experiences. Learning Beyond the Classroom encourages students to obtain hands-on experience and to learn about professionalism; it also provides a way to apply classroom knowledge. Some examples of LBC could include: internships, fieldwork, university courses outside of traditional curricula, or attending 8 cultural and/or academic events. All courses and events for LBC must be university approved.
  • Why LBC?
    • Provides opportunities to apply traditional learning in unique ways
    • Actively builds and maintains the EMU community
  • Who needs LBC?
    • refer to the program listing
    • any pre-2007 transfer students who choose to follow the new gen ed requirements
  • When do I have to complete my LBC?
    • Any time between when you enroll here at EMU and when you submit your graduation application. (You must complete your LBC to graduate)
  • Where do I complete my LBC?
    • Any approved LBC course or experience, and the events/courses must be affiliated with EMU (even if held off campus).
