Writing-Intensive Course Guidelines

The Writing Intensive Subcommittee is committed to honoring each discipline's approaches to the Writing Intensive Course Outcomes. We are hesitant to list additional sets of criteria other than the outcomes, as WI courses will look very different for each major. However, there have been a lot of questions about what a WI course might look like, and we offer these general parameters in the spirit of helping faculty see how existing courses or new courses might become WI.

Please keep in mind that the following are guidelines, not requirements:

Students in WI courses usually write 1 major research paper or a series of 3-5 smaller writing projects;

• These research projects are usually "staged;" student work is supported through intermediate steps with opportunities for feedback and revision;
• Writing projects usually count for 30-60% of a student's final grade.
