Interests and Expertise

Professor Khan joined the faculty at Eastern Michigan University in Fall 2011. She teaches
courses in urban and regional planning and policy, geography, and sustainable development.

Her research is broadly focused on state and local economic development and urban
redevelopment processes and policies. Dr. Khan has studied the efficacy of tools such as tax
abatements and tax increment financing as catalysts for economic development and, more
recently, her work has explored local immigration policy. Her research has been published in
the Journal of Urban Affairs, Urban Affairs Review, and Economic Development Quarterly.
In addition to serving as the Urban and Regional Planning Program Coordinator for both the
undergraduate and graduate programs, she is a core faculty member in the Master of Public
Administration Program in the Department of Political Science and serves as a faculty affiliate in
the Environmental Science and Society Program. She is the past-Chair of the EMU President’s
Commission on Sustainability and served two terms as a member of the Ypsilanti Zoning Board
of Appeals.

In 2022, Dr. Khan was awarded the Outstanding Contributions to Interdisciplinarity Award by
the College of Arts and Sciences for her sustained commitment to interdisciplinarity at EMU.
