The Department of Geography and Geology at Eastern Michigan University is at the forefront of geospatial education and research in southeast Michigan. The department is renowned for its focus on providing a balanced education in geospatial science and technology to students from diverse academic backgrounds. Currently, the Department offers the following programs of study in GIS:

The focus of the GIS programs at EMU is on the following areas of the discipline: GIS theory, Remote Sensing, Aerial Photography, Cartography, GPS, Spatial Analysis, Desktop and Web GIS Programming, and Database/Geodatabase development. GIS students at EMU also have access to the Institute of Geospatial Research and Education (IGRE), which is located on the EMU campus, and which provides opportunities for practical training in GIS through internships.
Graduates from EMU GIS programs are able to apply cutting-edge geospatial technologies to their original areas of interests, e.g., geology, biology, planning, environmental science, etc., or become broad-based GIS specialists providing geospatial support to diverse fields. Graduates have found jobs in both the public and the private sectors in areas such as environmental management, urban planning, transportation planning, crime analysis, marketing, historic preservation, college teaching, GIS programming, and cartography.
