Procedures for Internships

The following are guidelines for Internships in the Planning undergraduate and graduate programs.

Internships are listed for 4, 5 or 6 credits. A 4-credit internship equates to a minimum of 300 hours of internship experience, 5 credits to 375 hours and 6 credits to 450 hours. You should select the credit number that meets these criteria. However, to save tuition costs you may register for a lower number of credits (e.g., 4 credits instead of 6) if you don't need the extra credits.  Note: you must contact a faculty adviser prior to registering for internship credit.

Current or recent work experience may count toward the hours required. Your program adviser (Dr. Khan for graduate students, Dr. Jones for undergraduate students) will determine whether such experience meets the criteria of being Planning-related experience based on information provided by you and your internship job supervisor.

To document your internship, you should provide your adviser a letter indicating you wish to get an internship for a position with a specified firm or agency. The letter should describe the work you expect to be doing toward internship credit and the approximate date of the experience. At the end of your internship, you should provide a letter to your adviser specifying where you worked, the type of experience, the total number of hours, and the name and phone number of your immediate supervisor at the internship. There also should be a letter from your supervisor verifying the information. The supervisor will be contacted by the adviser to discuss an appropriate grade.
