Preservation Eastern
Shortly after the Program began, historic preservation students formed their own organization, Preservation Eastern (PE) which publishes a quarterly newsletter The Post and Lintel, sponsors social functions, hosts guest speakers and lobbies in support of the preservation of historic structures (i.e., the Towner House in Ypsilanti and Welch Hall on campus). In 1997 and 2011, PE was awarded the highly prestigious gold medallion award for Student Organization of the Year by EMU’s office of Student Affairs and Campus Life.
In the past, event speakers have included local, state, and national preservation professionals, program alumni, retired faculty, preservation consultants, and a host of related guests. Site visits and work days have been sponsored at locations with regional historic and architectural significance, including Detroit’s historic Fort Wayne and Ann Arbor’s Cobblestone Farms and organizes student participation in Preservation Week and Ypsilanti Heritage Festival Activities. PE also provides networking opportunities and updates on jobs and internships in the preservation world.
