Graduate Certificate in Gerontology

The Certificate in Gerontology is an 18-hour, interdisciplinary program of study that emphasizes a life course perspective and addresses realities and myths of growing old. The result is an education that enhances the ability to work with or on behalf of older people effectively and compassionately.

Why EMU?

  • Competitive tuition rates
  • Evening and weekend courses for the working professional
  • Not required to enroll into a graduate degree program in order to obtain the certificate
  • Electives offered on campus or at other outreach locations
  • Complete the program in one year or take up to three years
  • Ability to begin fall, winter, spring, or summer terms

There are many graduate level master's programs that may be combined with the certificate, including sociology, criminology, social work, occupational therapy, nursing, nutrition, psychology (clinical behavioral), public administration, music, speech and language, and women's studies.

The Certificate in Gerontology offers career enhancement in a variety of settings such as social services, health care and nursing, health and public administration,  design, physical/occupational/recreational therapy, aging policy and research, politics and consumer issues, counseling, teaching, business and finance, marketing, psychology, journalism and public relations, travel and tourism, and technology assessment.
