The Gerontology Program Student Organization (GPSO)

First meeting of the year!

Tuesday, October 5th, 4-5pm
RSVP for pizza count (bring own beverage)
ROOM 102 ROOSEVELT

Welcome back! At our first meeting of the year, we'll be talking about upcoming events and electing new officers. Come out and meet other people interested in Gerontology who are students, students working in the field, and some alumni from the program!

If you are interested in the positions of President, Vice President, Graduate Representative/Secretary, or Undergraduate Representative/Membership, please email me and I will send you some information.

Some of the highlights of this meeting are:

  • Solicit ideas for our GPSO BookClub book & set a date (and a new location since Bombadill's Coffeehouse is no more)
  • Pick a GPSO fall charity event (last year we did Chore Day through Neighborhood Senior Services and raked leaves for a lovely, elderly woman in Ann Arbor)
  • Elect new officers for 2010-2011
  • Talk about the Annual Fall Lecture/Reception on Oct. 13 titled “Aging in Place: Making it Work.” by Robin Boyle, PhD (Dept. of Urban Studies & Planning, Wayne State), sign up welcome table help for event
  • Annouce GPSO's co-hosting the week long visit of 2 experts in Gerontology from Ukraine in mid March (we'll be looking for participants to do fun things like go to lunch & dinner!) (full details at January meeting presented by Dr. Thomas!)

Pass along: Excellent article from the NYT about how Mick Jagger and other celebrity exceptions his age stir up feelings in the elderly that unless they are acting like that (or their grandchildren) then they aren't 'successfully' aging: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/11/weekinreview/11zernike.html?_r=2&emc=eta1

Thank you all for your interest in the Gerontology Program Student Organization at Eastern Michigan University. GELITA MAXWELL ( GPSO PRESIDENT)
