Guest Students

To become an EMU guest student:

For graduate course(s)

If you are a graduate student from another school you may follow this procedure:

Complete the Application for Graduate Admission by marking the bottom box for guest student.
Submit it and the application fee to the Office of Admissions, 401 Pierce Hall.
In addition, submit sealed documentation from your university registrar indicating you are a student in good standing who will return to complete a program of study. This will prevent the need for official transcripts to be sent to EMU.

If you attend a participating Michigan university, the Michigan Council of Graduate Schools has authorized the use of the MIGS form that enables graduate students from one Michigan university to enroll in graduate courses offered by another Michigan university without being fully admitted to that university.

Complete the MIGS form and obtain your graduate advisor's signature along with the signature of the MIGS Liaison Officer at your university (typically the Dean or Associate Dean of the Graduate School).
Submit the form to the EMU Graduate School in 200 Boone Hall.

If you are an international student, the following documents are required:

For students with an F-1 or J-1 visa, International Student Adviser Letter
For students on other visas, a copy of that visa

Once you have a student number, you then may register online for the course. You will pay EMU tuition and fees.

When the course has been completed, you must request that EMU transcripts be sent to your university in order to receive transfer credit. This is handled through the Office of Records and Registration, 303 Pierce Hall.

For undergraduate course(s)

Since the coursework you wish to take is an undergraduate course, the MIGS form can not be used.

Complete the Application for Graduate Admission by marking the bottom box for guest student.
Submit it and the application fee to the Office of Admissions, 401 Pierce Hall.
In addition, submit sealed documentation from your university registrar indicating you are a student in good standing who will return to complete a program of study. This will prevent the need for official transcripts to be sent to EMU.

To become a guest student at another university:

For graduate course(s)

The MIGS has authorized the use of a form that enables graduate students from one Michigan university to enroll in graduate courses offered by another Michigan university without being fully admitted to that university. See page 2 of the MIGS form for a list of participating universities.

Complete the MIGS form and obtain your graduate adviser's signature.
Submit the form to the Graduate School in 200 Boone Hall.

You will pay tuition and fees of that university (not EMU).

Graduate Assistants would receive tuition scholarship through the Office of Financial Aid for the dollar amount of EMU tuition and fees as if the course had been taken here. Monies or tuition refund would be obtained from your Eagle One card. You are responsible for paying the tuition bill from the other university. Work with the Graduate School to process the tuition scholarship.

When the course has been completed and you want to transfer it to your EMU program of study, official transcripts must be sent to the Office of Admissions. Upon graduation audit, the Office of Records will verify course completion with a B or better grade. The course credit and grade will be added to your EMU graduate GPA.

For undergraduate course(s)

Since the course in question is an undergraduate course, the MIGS form can not be used.

The Office of Records and Registration, 303 Pierce Hall, has guest forms to be used for graduate students taking undergraduate course work at another university. They verify that you are a student in good standing.

You submit the form to the other university in order to receive a student number for registering for the course. A fee may be required by the other university.

Undergraduate course work CAN NOT be transferred onto a graduate program of study but may be used to meet undergraduate curricular deficiencies or prerequisites to graduate work, as noted on a program of study.

Request transcripts be sent from the other university to the EMU Office of Admissions for scanning. Academic departments/schools can view them to verify work completion.
