2008-2009 Librarian Faculty Position Openings

Maps/Public Service Librarian

A temporary position is open in the Eastern Michigan University Library for a Maps and Public Services librarian to work part-time (20 hours/wk) during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Map Library responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate with the Map Librarian and Map Library Assistant to process and catalog paper maps.
  • Participate in planning, designing, and maintenance of web pages that include specific information about cartographic resources and creating finding aids.
  • Provide assistance to users on how to find, use and understand cartographic materials.

Public Services Duties include:

  • Provide general instruction and reference assistance to a diverse population of library patrons at the reference desk and via the Internet
  • Provide expert research support, training, and instruction to students, faculty, and others
  • Participate in the use and delivery of new information technologies in all public services and instruction functions
  • Instruct undergraduate and graduate students in library use and promote information literacy
  • Some evening work maybe required. 

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (ALA accredited)
  • Bachelor level courses in geography and/or cartography
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with a map library collection
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with computer programs such as OCLC and creating web pages
  • Knowledge of general and specialized reference works, and current electronic reference sources
  • Working knowledge of and experience with automated library systems and the internet
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a library faculty environment
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline with an emphasis on spatial data, such as in the field of geography, earth sciences, land use planning, etc.
