Do you want to search for articles about
a topic in periodicals?
If a specific index (also often referred to as
a periodical database) has not been suggested by a teacher or librarian,
start
by using a multi-subject index.
Which index(es) to start with?
- Infotrac
& General OneFile
- Search both Academic OneFile and General OneFile, which together index about 15,000 titles and include more than 8,000 full-text titles. They index The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and Christian Science Monitor; include full-text from wire services covering agriculture, general news, broadcast news, government, business press releases, industry topics, sports and current events from all over the world; and index general interest magazines; refereed academic journals; business publications; technology periodicals; plus specialty titles in law, health care and computers.
Limit your search to only articles with full-text as well as to refereed
journals. [What are refereed journals? "Refereed
journals are those in which articles, before they are published, must
be reviewed by a body of peers, experts in the same field as the writer.
Peer review does not guarantee that an article is correct, but it does
help ensure that data and methodology have met a high standard. Articles
from non-refereed journals might also meet the same standards, but no
committee has certified that this is so."]
- Wilson Select Plus
- Lists the contents of about 1,600 periodicals across many subject
fields. Every article has full-text.

In addition to multi-subject periodical indexes,
the library subscribes to indexes that list the contents of periodicals
that focus on single or closely related subjects. For example, if you
are seeking articles related to business or management you
might search
ABI/Inform
Global; if you are seeking articles related to education,
you might search ERIC or Education
Abstracts; if you are seeking articles relelated
to psychology, you might search PsycINFO.
Suggestions for indexes in other areas can be found on the library
database page by clicking on the drop-down menu following the phrase
"My Research Subject is in:".
