Finding CDs, DVDs, and Videos
in the Library Catalog

First, go to the EMU Library Catalog

• Click the 'Library Catalog' tab on the library home page

• Or, enter the library catalog web address in your browser: http://portal.emich.edu/

Shortcut to Finding CDs

• On the right side of the library catalog screen...
• Click the dropdown menu below the phrase "Limit Keyword Search To:" and then click on "Sound Recording"

• Type the artist name, title, or your subject in the search input box following the word "Find", e.g.     "chet baker"     and then click the Search button
• If the name or subject is a phrase, with two or more adjacent words, type double quotes before and after the phrase, as you see in the example.

• The results screen below reveals that 8 sound recordings were found. The yellow highlight reveals that the location of the first item is in the Library's storage device and that it is not checked out and is therefore available for borrowing. Clicking the title of the first item 'Champs-Elysees [sound recording]'...

• ...reveals that there are 3 CDs..

• ...and that they are located in the library storage device. Click the phrase 'Place Request' to retrieve them from storage for you to pick up at the Library Circulation Desk.

Shortcut to Finding Videocassettes and DVDs

• On the right side of the library catalog screen...
• Click the dropdown menu below the phrase "Limit Keyword Search To:" and then click on "Videos and DVDs"

• Type the artist name, title, or your subject in the search input box following the word "Find", e.g.     "magic flute"     and then click the Search button
• If the name or subject is a phrase, with two or more adjacent words, type double quotes before and after the phrase, as you see in the example.

• The results screen reveals that 2 items were found with the phrase "magic flute" in the description. Both items are located in the library storage device. Item 1 is in DVD format and Item 2 is in VHS format. Clicking the title of the first item "Trollflojten"...

• ...reveals information about the work and that it is located in the library storage device. You can request it from storage by clicking the phrase "Place Request".

The Catalog menu choice limiting the search to Videos and DVDs brings up results that include BOTH the videocassette format and the DVD format.

If you want to limit the results to videocassette format only, type a space following your search term or phrase and then type   vhs

If you want to limit the results to DVD format only, type a space following your search term or phrase and then type   dvd

The example below shows how to search for the Magic Flute in dvd format only.
