U.S. Government Documents Collection

General Information

The Goverment Documents Collection contains published government information from state, federal and international government bodies. The collection is designated by the Federal Government as a selective depository, which means that we currently receive about 50 percent of all federal publications. Two Michigan regional depository libraries receive almost all government publications. They are the Detroit Public Library and the Library of Michigan in Lansing.

Searching the Collection

WebVoyager (http://portal.emich.edu/), our online catalog, lists the government documents available in our library as well as links to Web sites where you can find them.

To limit your search of our local catalog to only those items in the Government Documents Collection:

  1. Click on the "Limits" button in the lower right-hand corner of the search screen.
  2. Set the Location to "Government Documents."
  3. Click on the "Set Limits" button.

Borrowing Government Documents

The Federal Depository Library Program gives the public free access to government information. Therefore, most of the Government Document Collection can be checked out by any of our Congressional District residents for a period of 3 weeks. Overdue and lost materials policies apply to government publications in the same manner as to other materials.

Government Document Databases

We offer access to several specialized databases, including LexisNexis Congressional, Thomas (U.S. Congress on the Internet), GPO Monthly Catalog and CQ Weekly.

To search these databases, jump to Halle Library's Databases for Periodicals, Books, Etc. Web Page at http://brand.emich.edu/indexdesubject.php.

Online Resources

Most government agencies have their own Web sites, and many of the print, microfiche and CD-ROM titles are also published on the Web. Two places to search for online government information are:

Halle Library's Government Information Web Page
(http://www.emich.edu/halle/govdocs/)

Federal Agency Directory
(http://www.lib.lsu.edu/gov/fedgov.html)

Location

The Government Documents Collection is located on the north side of the Second Level of the library.

Hours

The Government Documents Collection is open the same hours as the Halle Library building.
