Who
May Use EMU Library's Interlibrary Loan
Privileges
People affiliated with EMU may use our
interlibrary loan service. This includes
faculty, staff and currently enrolled
students. We cannot extend interlibrary
loan to our courtesy card holders, including
alumni or members of the greater community,
etc.
What
May Be Requested
Materials the EMU Library does not own,
including:
- Books,
government documents, etc.
- Articles
from journals/magazines/newspapers (periodicals)
we do not own or have access
-
Dissertations and theses (We will gladly
request dissertations that are available
through interlibrary loan. If we cannot
borrow the dissertation you want free
of charge, you or your academic department
may purchase it through Dissertation
Express.)
Some
items are difficult, if not impossible,
to borrow through ILL. These items include
books and other materials that are older
than one hundred years, are in poor condition,
or are rare or valuable.
The
following items are not available through
interlibrary loan
- Media:
videos, films, CDs, etc.
- Textbooks
for classes: students may not request
textbooks
- Reference
materials (*very* few libraries lend
these out)
- Items,
which are to be placed on reserve in
our library
- Articles
available only from non-EMU Library
electronic journals or full-text databases
- Entire
issues or several articles from the
same journal issue
- Articles
from non-EMU Library journals that are
only available online
- Popular
books such as those on the "Best Seller"
list. Please use your public library. EMU's interlibrary
loan service is for academic research.
NOTE:
The Library reserves the right to limit
or refuse ILL service.
For
large numbers of request, contact Joe
Badics, Acquisitions Librarian, at joseph.badics@emich.edu
or 734.487.0020, x2053.
Alternatives
to ILL
If the EMU Library does not have the book
you want, check out our agreements on
borrowing materials
from area libraries. (Sometimes it
is easier and faster to get the book yourself!)
Cost
for Using ILL
There is rarely cost to you to use ILL
except for overdue fines, which are $1
per item per day. Failure to return overdue
material will also result in borrowing
and registration holds placed on your
university record. Interlibrary loan service
is a courtesy extended by other lending
libraries, and if their regulations are
disregarded, they may discontinue their
service to our library.
Of
course, we will not order anything that
will cost you money without your permission
Notification
While some items may arrive within a week
or so of submitting your requests, we
recommend allowing at least 2 weeks for
ILL requests. While you will receive an
automated e-mail message when your materials
are available, it remains your responsibility
to check on the status of your request
through your ILL account. Please check
your ILL account to make sure your contact
information is correct!
Delivery
and Return of Materials
You can pick up your materials at the
Library's Circulation Desk. Please bring
your EMU ID to check out your materials.
Articles received
electronically will be delivered online in PDF format unless the
customer chooses to opt out of the service. We encourage you
to use electronic delivery because it provides savings in time
and labor for the EMU Library, and permits you to receive your
articles more quickly and from any location.
If you ordered books and other materials
that must be returned to the lending library,
an ILL book band will be on the front
of the items. Please do not remove this
band.
All
interlibrary loans must be returned to
the Library's Circulation Desk. Please
do not return materials through the Library's
book drops.
Due
Dates for Interlibrary Loan Books
The loan period is determined by the lending
library, not the EMU Library. Most books
are available for three weeks. The due
date will be stated on the front of the
item. Please make sure you know when the
items are due when you pick them up from
the Library's Circulation Desk.
You
must abide by the conditions of use as
defined by the lending library. Some lending
libraries state that their materials cannot
be photocopied or leave our building.
In these instances, the conditions of
use will be documented on the front of
the material.
NOTE:
The lending library reserves the right
to recall their materials before the due
date. In this case, your need to return
the materials immediately.
There
is no due date for most articles.
Overdue Policy
All ILL transactions will be suspended
for patrons with overdue ILL materials!
Overdue interlibrary loan materials are
fined $1 per day, faculty and staff included.
Books
28 days past the due date will result
in you being charged for replacement costs
as determined by the lending library.
In addition, a non-refundable $20 EMU
Library processing fee will be assessed.
What this means is that if a book is not
returned in good condition within 28 days
of the due date you will be charged a
replacement fee by the lending library,
any and all processing fees as set by
the lending library, and EMU Library overdue
fines plus a $20 processing fee.
Renewing
your ILL Book Request
Renewal requests are submitted through
the "ILL View/Renew Checked Out Items"
option.
Renewal
requests must be submitted no less than
three days before the due date. No more
than one renewal is permitted.
The
lending library determines the new due
date! Many libraries do not permit renewals.
We
will contact you with the new due date
as soon as we receive a response from
the lending library. If the lending library
chooses not to renew the item, you must
return it by the due date.
Suspension
of Privileges
Repeatedly ordering materials and failing
to pick them up may result in a $10 fine
for each item you don't pick up and the
suspension of your ILL privileges. Although
ordering materials through ILL rarely
costs you money, it does cost the library
approximately $25 per request. We are
happy to absorb this cost if the material
is being used. However, we cannot afford
to absorb the cost for items that are
ordered and never picked up.
