Children in the Library Policy

The Library is oriented toward the students, faculty and staff at EMU, along with adult members of the Ypsilanti area. We cannot guarantee the safety or protection of unescorted children in the building.

All children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult while in the Library. Unescorted children will be required to rejoin their parent/s. If a parent or guardian cannot be located, the University's Department of Public Safety will be contacted. When appropriate, exceptions may be made at the discretion of library personnel.

Access to, or use of, the Internet by minor children is solely the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian. Unlike many public libraries, computer users at the EMU Library do not access the Internet through a filter. While some local city and county policies may require public libraries to provide filtered Internet access to minors, EMU libraries do not use filtering software because this is a university library and does not offer services to children.

All users of the Halle Library computer labs are expected to follow the EMU Acceptable Use Policy at http://www.emich.edu/web_standards_guide/acceptable_use_policy.html .
