Recreational Fiction & Nonfiction
Books for EMU Students

The Winter 2007 survey of EMU undergraduates regarding library resources and services indicated that students want more recreational fiction and nonfiction books available in the Library.

Unfortunately, at this time the Library's budget and Collection Development Policy do not currently support the purchase of leisure reading as part of the Library collections. A new option became available to the EMU community during 2007...

Obtain recreational reading, listening (CDs), and video materials via the Michigan eLibrary Catalog, MeLCat.

MeLCat lets you search at one time the catalogs of over 140 Michigan libraries for books, CDs, and videos. If an item is available for lending from one of those libraries, it will be delivered to the EMU library for your use within 3 to 5 days of your request.

For example, if you are seeking:

  • a book about knitting
  • an instructional video that illustrates knitting techniques
  • a book to help you learn Mandarin Chinese
  • audio material to help your conversational Mandarin Chinese
  • David Anthony Durham's fantasy novel Acacia
MeLCat can offer a range of material that the Library's budget does not allow us to purchase ourselves. A brief, illustrated introduction to using Melcat can be found on the Library web site.

Want help finding what to read?

Two databases from the Michigan eLibrary (MeL), also available on the EMU Library database page, can enhance your leisure reading.

What Do I Read Next?
This readers' advisory database includes over 125,000 recommended fiction and nonfiction titles, more than 58,000 plot summaries, and awards information from 562 awards, all to help you uncover new reading adventures, find long-remembered favorites, and discover award-winning titles. Search by title, author, subject, keyword, time period, geographic location, character and reading level to discover similar reading materials. Follow the series links to additional titles, use the Help Me Find a Book search to get recommendations based on some of your favorite titles or topics, or let the database experts recommend books that capture the type of book you’re looking for.
NoveList
NoveList is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 135,000 fiction titles. It also includes other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, What We're Reading, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Annotated Book Lists. For school media specialists and teachers there are Picture Book Extenders and articles on Teaching with Fiction.
